NAB 2023: Synology DS1823xs+ takes home Best Storage

Congratulations to the Synology DS1823xs+, winner of our Best Storage of NAB 2023 award. The Synology DS1823xs+ is a central data storage server that offers secure data storage and sharing in a desktop form factor.

Inside the Synology DS1823xs+

This new storage solution from Synology aims to provide the functionality of a dedicated server rack in a smaller, more manageable form factor. Therefore, the enclosure is designed to fit comfortably on a desk.

However, despite its compact design, when fully loaded, the DS1823xs+ provides up to 144 TB of storage capacity across eight drive bays. If that’s not enough, adding two Synology DX517 expansion units boosts storage capacity to up to 324 TB.

In addition, this new NAS supports several different configuration options. For instance, there is the option to add M.2 NVMe or SATA SSD storage volumes or cache for HDD volumes.

Connectivity

The Synology DS1823xs+ comes with one 10GbE and two 1GbE ports by default and can accommodate additional 10 GbE or 25 GbE ports via the PCIe Expansion slot. It also comes with three USB 3 ports for connecting external storage devices and two eSATA ports for additional expansion storage chassis.

All of these connection options make the DS1823xs+ suitable for a variety of use cases. For instance, the unit can back up 300 endpoints and manage up to 75 IP cameras. Or, it can be used to simply sync and share files between different sites and devices, facilitating a smoother remote production workflow.

For read and write speeds, the DS1823xs+ promises a sequential read speed of over 3,100 MB/s sequential and a write speed of over 2,600 MB/s.

Browser-based control

For configuring the DS1823xs+, Synology offers DiskStation Manager (DSM). This browser-based operating system allows for remote administration and includes tools for storage management, data protection and server maintenance.

Pricing and availability

The Synology DS1823xs+ is available for approximately $1,800 without storage media. When filled with compatible 4 TB storage drives, the price is around $3,300. For more information, visit synology.com.
