Canon’s EOS R6 V sits in the company’s video-first EOS V series, but it shoots stills too. Until now it couldn’t fire a flash. Firmware 1.1.0 fixes that.

Canon released firmware 1.1.0 for the EOS R6 V on July 22, 2026. External flash support leads the release notes, and it’s less a bonus than a promise kept. When the R6 V was announced in May 2026, Canon said external flash support would arrive in a later firmware update.
The update covers flash firing, E-TTL balance and E-TTL II metering, which govern how the flash mixes with ambient light and how the camera calculates output for correct exposure. Slow synchro, flash function settings and flash C.Fn settings come along too. Those let you change the defaults on a Canon Speedlite from the camera body.
Two limits are worth knowing before you dig out a Speedlite. Sync tops out at 1/60 second, since the R6 V has no mechanical shutter. The body also lacks a traditional five-pin hotshoe, so it works with Canon’s Multi-Interface Speedlites but not with older flashes.
Other new features
Canon’s BR-E2 wireless remote controller now works with the camera. Developers get access through the Software Development Assistance Kit (EDSDK/CCAPI), which opens the door to custom apps that change settings and trigger the shutter. That matters most for studios running tethered or automated rigs. The update also enables a grid display during video recording.
Bug fixes
Three fixes ship with 1.1.0. One addresses shooting problems when auto power-off kicks in during interval timer shooting. Another sorts out the camera going unrecognized over USB when it’s connected to a smartphone. The third corrects movie digital IS metadata that was written incorrectly on Slow & Fast Motion Movie recordings below 24 fps.
What we think
The Canon EOS R6 V is a strong video-first body, and Canon gets credit for closing a gap it created at launch instead of letting it sit. For hybrid shooters, an external flash is sometimes the only way to get a usable still.
Temper expectations, though. A 1/60 sync speed rules out most daylight fill work, and the Multi-Interface requirement means the Speedlites already in your bag may not qualify. Call it competent with flash rather than good at it. Grab the update regardless. The remote support and bug fixes justify the download on their own.
