Tiny Sigma FP2 shoots 6K open gate for $2,199

Sigma has announced the launch schedule for its latest camera. The company says that the full-frame L-mount Sigma FP2 delivers “top-class performance in the world’s smallest body.” You can also switch the FP2 from still photography mode to become a cinema camera at the flip of a switch.

Compact design

The Sigma FP2 has a compact design, measuring just 4.4 inches (112.8 mm) by 2.8 inches (69.9 mm by 1.6 inches (41.8 mm). It’s also lightweight at 16.2 ounces (460 g), including a battery and an SD card. Still, it has a 3.15-inch tilting LCD touchscreen with a resolution of around 2.1 million dots. The FP2 also includes a full-size HDMI port, a 3.5 mm stereo mic jack and two USB-C ports, one of which supports headphone output.

Sensor

The Sigma FP2 features a 24.5-megapixel partially stacked CMOS sensor. Sigma says that this has a high-speed readout which “significantly reduces rolling shutter distortion”. It also delivers up to 14.1 stops of dynamic range, with 7 stops of highlight headroom at ISO 1250 and above. In addition, the FP2 has a 6K Open Gate mode which captures all the information from the 3:2 aspect ratio full-frame sensor. The base ISOs are 1250 and 10000 for Log and RAW shooting, or 320 and 2500 for MOV files.

Video recording

The Sigma FP2 can record video in Apple ProRes RAW and RAW HQ. It also offers H.264 and H.265 MOV files. You can shoot in 6K and 4K up to 59.94 frames per second (fps), or up to 119.88 fps in 4K crop mode and 2K.  The camera supports video shooting in aspect ratios of 3:2 open gate, 16:9, 17:9 and 4:3. In addition, you can record in L-Log for more scope to grade your footage in post-production.

Video assist tools

The Sigma FP2 offers a range of professional tools to ensure your video looks its best. These include waveform, histogram, zebra pattern and false color for setting your exposure. You can also use focus peaking to check that your movie footage is sharp. In addition, the FP2 supports electronic image stabilization for video recording.

Director’s viewfinder

The Sigma FP2 features a Director’s Viewfinder function that simulates the shooting ranges of various cinema cameras. Supported manufacturers include ARRI, Sony and RED. It also offers an extensive selection of camera models, including the Alexa, Amira, Venice, Burano, Helium, Dragon and Komodo. In addition, the FP2 offers anamorphic de-squeeze factors of 1.25x, 1.3x, 1.33x, 1.5x, 1.6x, 1.65x, 1.8x and 2.0x.

Other features

The Sigma FP2 can record audio internally in 32-bit float. This has such a wide dynamic range that you don’t need to worry about setting a recording level as the signal can’t clip. The FP2 also achieves approximately 30% longer battery life than the original FP camera. Sigma says its high-capacity battery can capture approximately 370 still images or about 130 minutes of video. In addition, the FP2 features 70GB of internal storage that supports high-speed writing. You can record to an internal SD card or external SSD as well.

Optional accessories

Sigma has developed a range of accessories to expand the FP2’s capabilities. The EVF-21 is an electronic viewfinder with a 0.5-inch, 5.76 million-dot OLED panel. It also features a tilting mechanism, eye sensor and a large eye cup. You can also get the LVF-21 LCD viewfinder, which is an optical loupe that attaches over the rear screen on the FP2. You can also add a hot shoe unit and a base plate.

What we think

The Sigma FP2 is delivers all you need from a cinema camera in a truly compact body. It’s around the same size as Blackmagic Design’s original Pocket Cinema Camera, which was only Micro Four Thirds. So, it’s quite remarkable that Sigma has fitted in a full-frame sensor. You also get internal ProRres and ProRes RAW recording for high-quality recordings. In addition, you have on-board 32-bit float for great audio and a range of professional tools for exposure and focus. With the popularity of L-mount lenses, the FP2 is an ideal B-cam for many other cameras. It’s also ideal when you want a pocketable filming solution that doesn’t compromise on image quality. The Sigma FP2 is going to be very popular.

Pricing and availability

The Sigma FP2 is scheduled to launch on Wednesday, November 11, 2026. It will retail at $2,199.
