Beeble’s SwitchX generative AI promises VFX you can control

Beeble, the VFX relighting platform, has announced SwitchX. It’s a generative video capability that allows you to change the lighting, background, props and costumes in your videos. However, your subject will be maintained consistent, recognizable and intact.

Production-ready controllable video generation

Beeble says that it has built SwitchX around controllability with core idea being “switch anything except what matters”. With the AI tool you can completely change the background behind the subject in your video. This also means that you can turn an everyday room into a professional podcast or studio setup.

In addition, you can relight your scene to shift the mood, switch the genre, or change the time of day. You can even modify props, costumes, or set elements, all with physically correct light interaction.

How does it work?

To use SwitchX, you start by uploading your video clip. The AI then automatically detects the main subject, with an interactive masking tool for precise control. Next, you can add a reference image for your scene or background. Alternatively, you can ask SwitchX to create your scene from a prompt. Then you simply hit Generate and the AI analyzes your original footage frame by frame and pixel by pixel. Beeble claims that in just 5 minutes, SwitchX can produce a crisp 2K video with new lighting, background, shadows and camera perspective However, it will preserve key details such as your subject’s identity, facial characteristics and audio sync.

Samples

Beeble has released a SwitchX sample video on YouTube. It features the presenter in a number of AI generated scenarios. You can also see the original video clip, the alpha channel, the reference image and the final output. Examples include changing an office environment to an artist’s studio and a jazz club. In other videos, the presenter is transported to a city street, a subway station and a tropical greenhouse. For each scene, the colors and lighting on the presenter change to perfectly match the background and scenario.

What we think

From the samples that Beeble has shared, SwitchX produces very impressive results. The masking of the subject in each clip is very precise with no visible blurring or jitteriness at the fringes. Plus, the colors and lighting on the subject change to match the background source perfectly. By using your own reference images for the background, you have control over the final output as well. How consistent SwitchX can remain over longer shots remains to be seen, but for short clips it appears to work well. If you want to see for yourself, you can try SwitchX for free with your own video at the Beeble cloud app.
