TAMRON brings its compact 20-40mm F/2.8 zoom to Nikon Z

Run-and-gun shooters know the drill: switch to a wide lens for the establishing shot, swap back for the interview, then repeat the process at the next location. TAMRON’s 20-40mm F/2.8 Di III VXD (Model A062) is designed to reduce those lens changes, and it’s now coming to Nikon Z. It’s also available for Sony FE.

The 20-40mm range covers everything from ultra-wide establishing shots to a natural standard perspective, while maintaining a constant f/2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range. Its compact size makes it a practical fit for gimbals, and its quiet autofocus is well suited to shooting while recording audio. TAMRON built the lens with video, vlogging and hybrid shooters in mind, and its feature set reflects that focus.

Two focal lengths that do most of the work

At 20 mm, the lens is wide enough for establishing shots, tight interiors or self-recording. A vlogger holding the camera at arm’s length stays in frame with plenty of the scene behind them. The 40mm end sits close to the perspective of human vision. It’s a go-to focal length for interviews, product details and B-roll.

Having both in one lens cuts down on changes between setups. On many shoots, the 20-40mm can stay on the camera from the opening wide shot through the final interview.

Moving between the two ends takes a 65-degree turn of the zoom ring. The short throw pays off on gimbals, where less hand travel near a balanced rig means fewer nudges that throw it off.

Close focus and optics

Minimum focus distance is 6.7 inches (0.17 m) at 20 mm, with a maximum magnification of 1:3.8. At 40 mm, MOD stretches to 11.4 inches (0.29 m) for 1:5.1. The wide-end number is the interesting one. Getting that close at 20 mm produces an exaggerated, in-your-face perspective on hands, tools or products. A standard zoom racked out to its long end can’t give you that look.

The optical design uses 12 elements in 11 groups. A nine-blade circular diaphragm keeps out-of-focus highlights round when you stop down toward the f/22 minimum. TAMRON’s BBAR-G2 coating suppresses ghosting and flare. That matters when you’re shooting toward windows, practicals or stage lighting.

Because the aperture holds at f/2.8 across the range, exposure doesn’t shift if you zoom during a take. The fast aperture also buys headroom in dim venues where you’d otherwise push ISO.

Built to stay on the camera

The Sony FE version measures 3.4 inches (86.5 mm) long and weighs 12.9 oz (365 g). At that size, it’s a natural fit for camera grips, handheld rigs or compact gimbals with limited payload.

Moisture-resistant construction guards against light rain on location. A fluorine coating on the front element repels water and fingerprints, so cleaning the glass between setups takes one wipe.

Quiet VXD autofocus

Focus is driven by TAMRON’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor. It’s fast and precise with smooth subject tracking. It’s also quiet, which counts when you’re recording dialogue on the camera mic. TAMRON notes some operational sound may still be picked up depending on the environment. In a silent room, you’ll still want an external mic.

Customization through TAMRON Lens Utility

The 20-40mm is compatible with TAMRON Lens Utility and works in tandem with TAMRON-LINK for wireless connectivity through the mobile app, available for iOS and Android. The desktop version runs on Windows and Mac. It connects directly to the lens via USB-C.

For video, the standout setting is linear focus control. Most mirrorless lenses change focus based on how fast you turn the ring. In linear mode, the same rotation always moves focus the same distance, much like a cine lens. That makes manual focus pulls repeatable from take to take. Lens Utility also lets you adjust the focus ring’s rotation angle along with M/A response. Firmware updates install through the desktop app.
