How the Tamron 16-30mm F/2.8 G2 is a dream lens for hybrid creators

Rounding out its fast G2 trinity, TAMRON has officially completed the series with the release of the Tamron 16-30mm F2.8 G2 ultra-wide-angle zoom for Sony E-mount and Nikon Z-mount. Paired with the 28-75mm F/2.8 G2 and the 70-180mm F/2.8 VC G2, the Tamron 16-30mm completes a compact, versatile system that spans the entire 16mm to 180mm range. And with that comes a lens that gives hybrid creators the flexibility to shoot nearly any scene, without sacrificing speed, portability or quality.

Built for every situation in the field

This new lens is essentially a hybrid shooter’s best friend. As part of the G2 series, the Tamron 16-30mm features a lightweight build that’s perfect for travel. On-the-go photographers and videographers can include this in their toolkits without adding much extra weight to their loadout. With the 28-75mm F/2.8 G2 and the 70-180mm F/2.8 G2, the entire payload weighs just 4 pounds. That means hybrid creators can pack all three lenses without issue.

On top of that, it comes with an internal zoom. This helps the lens maintain its balance, making it a great choice for handheld video shoots. And it’s built to withstand the elements; the lens is weather-sealed and includes a fluorine-coated front element to help resist dirt, smudges and moisture.

Optical quality and customization

Looking inside, the Tamron 16-30mm houses a 6-element, 12-group design that includes high-end XLD, LD and GM glass elements. The result is excellent resolution from edge to edge, even wide open. The constant F2.8 aperture across the zoom range allows you to work in low-light situations, all the while offering depth-of-field control.

Additionally, the lens features a nine-blade circular aperture. These kinds of apertures help create natural-looking bokeh.

Precision autofocus for video with VXD motor

To be a usable lens for videography, every hybrid lens should operate silently. Thankfully, the Tamron 16-30mm comes with Tamron’s VXD linear motor. This model delivers fast, silent autofocus with impressive accuracy. The electro-controlled floating focus system also keeps the image sharp throughout the zoom range by compensating for aberrations.

Close focus for creative flexibility

What if you want to get up close and personal with your subject? With its 16mm to 30mm range, you can expect strong close-up performance. At 16mm, the minimum focusing distance is just 7.5 inches, with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.4. At 30mm, the MOD is 11.8 inches with a 1:7 ratio. Essentially, this gives you the ability to shoot dramatic wide-angle close-ups and work in confined spaces while still achieving sharp focus.

Customization with Tamron Lens Utility

Tamron gives users even more control with its Tamron Lens Utility software. By connecting a USB-C cable to the lens, you can customize focus behaviors and update firmware as needed.

Creators can program features like A-B Focus, Focus Preset and Focus Limiter, or even assign aperture control to the focus ring (Sony only). This means you can tailor the lens to match your exact workflow, whether you’re filming interviews, capturing time-lapses or shooting stills in fast-changing light.

A lens for hybrid creators

With its high-end optics and lightweight design, the Tamron 16-30mm F/2.8 G2 is built to handle it all. It’s a versatile, reliable tool that meets the demands of today’s hybrid creators.

And, if you use this lens with the rest of Tamron’s G2 zoom lineup, you’ll be ready for anything, regardless of your use case or shooting location. Together, the trio gives you full-frame coverage from 16mm to 180mm, all with a constant F2.8 aperture.
