Rokinon’s New Compact 24mm F2.8mm Lens Looks to Bring Big Performance to Sony E Mount Cameras

Today, Rokinon announced the newest addition to its popular line of full frame autofocus lenses for Sony E mount cameras: the Rokinon AF 24mm F2.8 Compact Lens.

Just like the rest of the lenses in the line, the 24mm F2.8 is designed for Sony full frame mirrorless cameras and focuses on three key points according to Rokinon: optical quality, portability and silent autofocus.

Rokinon aims to merge optical quality with portability

The 24mm F2.8 AF features a design of 7 glass elements in 7 groupings with 7 aperture blades. “Its construction has been optimally arranged for portability and to deliver high resolution from the center to the corners of the image,” claims Rokinon. The lens sports three Aspherical and two High Refractive Index elements along with Rokinon’s Ultra Multi-Coating to minimize chromatic aberrations and light dispersion.

The 24 mm F2.8 uses 7 glass elements in 7 groupings with 7 aperture blades.

It’s possible some may find the number of aperture blades to be limiting when it comes to bokeh. They may not get bokeh that’s as smooth as desired with 7 aperture blades, but the lens’ f2.8 aperture and wide-angle field of view probably isn’t attracting bokeh enthusiasts.

With the Sony Alpha a6000/a5000 series or other Sony APS-C cameras, the lens’ 24 mm focal length is equivalent to about 36mm. Also it weighs about 3.3 oz and has a minimum focusing distance of 9.5”.

Highlights:

  • Non-Rotating 49mm Filter Mount
  • Internal Focusing
  • Low Distortion, Coma, flare, ghosting, and CA
  • UMC Coating
In total, the 23 mm F2.8 weighs only 3.3 oz.

Pricing and Availability

The Rokinon AF 24mm F2.8 Compact Lens for Sony E will be releases in July for $399. It will include a reversible lens hood, lens caps and a custom fitted case.
