While phone mikes are known for recording echoey and hard to hear audio, Saramonic’s looking to change that with its SmartMic+Di and SmartMic+UC mics.
Both the SmartMic+Di and SmartMic+UC are described as “ultra-lightweight and compact microphones,” which is essential for any smartphone rig. The mics each weigh only 40 grams. Since phones are portable, you need to have your equipment portable, too. Otherwise, it takes away the huge advantage phones have over other shooting devices. These mic can plug directly into the Lightning port of Apple iOS devices or through Android’s USB-C port.
Focusing on the sounds in front of the camera
The mics feature a directional pickup pattern that focuses on the sounds in front of it. This means that it won’t pick up sounds to the sides or rear. So if you’re conducting an interview in the streets of a busy city, audio should come out clearer and more intelligible.
Using the SmartMic+ with your phone
Setting up the mics seems to be as simple as you can get. All you have to do is plug it into your phone. There are no batteries to install or charge and there are no levels to set. They look to be highly user-friendly.
Plus, they sport a gold-plated headphone jack that allows you to listen to the audio you’re recording without having to unplug the mic from your phone’s jack.
Protection from wind noise
The mics both use a foam windscreen that Saramonic promises is “snug-fitting” and “won’t accidentally fall off.” The windscreen is good for when you find yourself in windy conditions. There’s also a furry windscreen that’s included that can be pulled over the foam windscreen to add even more protection from the wind.
