RØDE has announced a new all-in-one console for video and audio production. With the RØDECaster Video Core you can switch between up to four video sources and five fully customizable scenes.
Compact design
The RØDECaster Video Core is a compact desktop console. It measures 9.4 inches (239mm) by 4.9 inches 125mm) by 1.8 inches (46mm) and weighs 24.9 ounces (705g). One thing that is immediately noticeable is that, apart from a volume control for the headphones, there are no controls on the device. In fact, it seems that the RØDECaster Video Core is the same as the RØDECaster Video S without the buttons. To control the Video Core, you need to use the RØDECaster App on your computer.
Inputs and outputs
The front panel of the RØDECaster Video Core is very simple with a single USB-C port and a volume control for the headphones. On the back, the set up is identical to the RØDECaster Video S. For power in, there is a USB-C PD input along with a physical power button. There’s also an ethernet port and another four USB-C inputs. In addition, you get one HDMI out and three HDMI in ports. For audio, there are two headphone sockets and two Neutrik combo ports. These support both XLR microphones and ¼-inch jack plugs which could be mics or instruments like an electric guitar.

Using the RØDECaster Video Core
You can switch between up to four video sources using the RØDECaster Video Core. These can come via the HDMI ports, USB-C, or over NDI via the ethernet port. When you run the RØDECaster App, you can see your camera feeds and switch between them. As well as instant cuts, you can also transition between shots with customizable fades, dips and wipes.
Also, you can design and save up to five unique scene layouts. These can feature video sources, graphics, and media, and you can switch between them with the click of a button.
Audio
The RØDECaster Video Core gives you the tools for great audio as well as video. You can mix, process and route up to nine audio sources at once. Each channel is also equipped with APHEX effects and processors for enhancing your sound. You get options including EQ, compression and signature enhancements like Aural Exciter and Big Bottom.
Other features
As well as video output, you can stream your content directly to YouTube, Twitch, or your favorite streaming platform from the RØDECaster Video Core via Ethernet. You can also record to a hard drive or USB storage device, with the option to save each video and audio source independently. You can even export an edit decision list use with DaVinci Resolve, including cuts, transitions, media and overlays.
Additionally, you can combine the RØDECaster Video Core with the RØDECaster Pro II or the RØDECaster Duo audio interfaces. You simply connect the two devices with a USB-C cable, and you can use the audio interface’s buttons to control the RØDECaster Video Core.
What we think
The RØDECaster Video Core is great new product from RØDE. The company recognized that a lot of users don’t use the buttons on the RØDECaster Video S, preferring software control only. If that’s you, you can pick up the RØDECaster Video Core for the exactly the same functionality. You will also save yourself $200 at today’s prices, with the RØDECaster Video S currently selling for $799. Plus, RØDECaster Pro II and RØDECaster Duo users can upgrade their audio interfaces with video switchers by adding the RØDECaster Video Core. RØDE deserve a lot of credit for listening to their users and finding a way to save them some money.
Pricing and availability
You can preorder the RØDECaster Video Core now with shipping scheduled to start in April. It’s priced at $599.
