Elgato has launched a new all-in-one studio teleprompter. As its name suggest, the Elgato Prompter XL is larger than the company’s previous teleprompter with a much bigger Full HD display.
Prompter XL
Elgato’s original teleprompter, called simply Prompter, used a nine-inch 1,024 x 600 pixel display. However, the new Prompter XL features a much larger 15.9-inch monitor. This means that you can use the new teleprompter with larger cameras and lenses. You can also read the text from further away. Elgato says that Prompter XL has a maximum reading range of up to 15 feet (4.6 meters). This gives the new device up to 2.5x more range than the original.
Display
The 15.6-inch Full HD display on the Elgato Prompter XL is the same size as the screen on a laptop. With 600 nits of brightness, you can also be confident of seeing your text clearly. It attaches magnetically to the body of the Prompter XL. In addition, you can also detach it from the teleprompter to use as a desktop monitor. Connecting the display to your computer is simple with a single USB-C cable carrying data and power.
Build
The Elgato Prompter XL has a rugged body with a metal skeleton beneath its outer shell for extra strength and durability. It also uses real 70/30 optical glass to reflect your text clearly while staying invisible on camera. Elgato says that the glass is tough enough to withstand everyday handling.
Also, you can remove it easily for travel or cleaning. Aligning your camera in the center of the device is quick and easy with just a few thumbscrews.
Compatibility
The Elgato Prompter XL is compatible with a wide range of mirrorless and DSLR cameras. It offers a maximum load capacity of 11 pounds (5 kg). You can also use camera and lens combinations up to 8.7 inches (22 cm) in length with the device’s camera bracket. Additionally, the Prompter XL supports lenses up to 6.3 inches (160 mm) in diameter without the backplate. You can use lenses with a 94-degree diagonal field of view when you use the universal back plate.
Other features
The Elgato Prompter XL measures 19.4 inches (493 mm) by 15.6 inches (396 mm) by 11.6 inches (295 mm) and weighs 6.6 pounds (2.973 kg). It comes with step-up rings for lenses from 49 to 82 mm. The Prompter XL also features two ¼-inch and one 3/8-inch threads for attaching accessories.
The free Camera Hub software gives you all the controls you need for the display via your computer or with a Stream Deck.
What we think
The Elgato Prompter XL is an ideal teleprompter for anyone working with mirrorless cameras or smaller cinema-style cameras. Its larger display makes it much easier to read your script from further away. This also means you can afford to be more creative with your camera positioning. The Prompter XL isn’t cheap, but it will save you a lot of time and effort if you present to camera. And, you get the bonus of being able to use the display as a monitor for your computer. If you are a content creator considering moving to a teleprompter, the Elgato Prompter XL is a great choice.
