DJI launches DJI Mic 3 mini wireless microphone system

DJI has launched a new ultralight wireless microphone system. The DJI Mic 3 features adaptive gain control and dual-file 32-bit float internal recording.

DJI Mic 3

You can pick up the DJI Mic 3 wireless microphone system as just a single transmitter and receiver. Alternatively, there is an option with two transmitters and one receiver, which comes in a charging case. However, you can expand the system to connect up to four transmitters to the receiver simultaneously. The main receiver can also sync audio to up to seven additional receivers for seamless collaboration.

Transmission range

The DJI Mic 3 supports automatic frequency hopping between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. This delivers a transmission range of up to 1,300 feet (400 meters). The system features robust anti-interference capabilities to ensure stable audio transmission, even in complex wireless environments, as well. This makes the DJI Mic 3 ideal for use at trade shows or sporting events.

Transmitter

The DJI Mic 3 Transmitter is tiny, weighing just 0.6 ounces (16 grams). It also features a detachable, rotating clip so you can angle the microphone for optimal audio capture. You can choose between a magnetic or a clip-on attachment.

You can purchase optional windscreens for the Mic 3 in five different colors to match your subjects’ clothing or the environment

Adaptive Gain Control

The Mic 3 is the first DJI microphone to feature two Adaptive Gain Control modes. Automatic mode suppresses sudden volume spikes and prevents clipping. This makes it ideal for outdoor environments with dramatic volume changes, such as sporting events. Alternatively, Dynamic mode automatically adjusts gain in response to volume changes to deliver consistent loudness. This makes it ideal for quiet indoor settings like studios.

Voice tone presets

For tone presets, the Mic 3 is also the first DJI microphone to offer three voice tone presets: Regular, Rich, and Bright. This feature professionally tunes voices, boosting low frequencies to reduce muddiness or enhancing high frequencies to improve clarity. It’s ideal for interviews where your subjects have different vocal characteristics.

Also, the Mic 3 features two-level active noise cancelling to reduce unwanted background sounds. It also offers a Lossless Audio option where the transmitter delivers uncompressed 48 kHz 24-bit audio directly to the receiver.

32-bit float

The DJI Mic 3 Transmitters support internal recording, so you always have a backup if you experience a dropout in the wireless system. 32-bit float internal recording also means that you don’t have to worry about the signal clipping. In addition, with dual-file internal recording, DJI Mic 3 saves both the original track and an algorithm-enhanced version at the same time.

Receiver

The DJI Mic 3 Receiver features a 1.1-inch AMOLED touchscreen and a dial. This means that you can quickly adjust gain, switch modes, or see battery status. The receiver also lets you choose between Mono and Stereo modes, so you can output audio from each transmitter separately or merge them into a single track.

In Quadraphonic mode, you can pair the Mic 3 Receiver with select Sony cameras or computer software and four audio tracks.

Connectivity

In terms of connectivity, the DJI Mic 3 has a direct connection to the DJI Osmo Audio ecosystem. This means that the Transmitters can pair with the Osmo 360, Osmo Action 5 Pro, Osmo Action 4, or Osmo Pocket 3 without a receiver. To connect with other devices, the Mic 3 Receiver features a locking 3.5 mm TRS output port, a 3.5 mm TRRS monitoring port, and a USB-C port. It can also connect directly to smartphones via Bluetooth without a receiver.

Battery life

The DJI Mic 3 Transmitter batteries last up to eight hours, and the receiver lasts up to 10 hours. Additionally, the charging case gives you around 2.4 full charges. This means you can use the system for up to 28 hours before you need to find an external power source. You can quick charge the system for only five minutes to get up to two hours of use from the transmitter and receiver. With 3C fast charging support, a full charge also only takes about 50 minutes. The Mic 3 offers multiple power-saving features to reduce the need for recharging as well.

Other features

The DJI Mic 3 offers high-precision timecode support. The transmitter can embed timecode data during internal recording. The receiver supports both timecode input and output. With less than one frame of drift over 24 hours, you can rely on the timecode to instantly align multi-camera footage in post-production. To download your audio recordings, you simply pop the transmitters in the charging case. You can then connect the case to your computer or smartphone via USB-C to export the files.

What we think

The DJI Mic 3 is a tiny but powerful wireless microphone system. It’s lightweight and easy to use yet still delivers the backup of 32-bit float internal recording. The Mic 3 also features a range of options to boost the quality of your audio recordings, even in challenging environments. And, you can expand the system as your needs grow by adding additional transmitters and receivers.

Pricing and availability

The DJI Mic 3 costs $219 for one receiver and transmitter. Alternatively, the kit with two transmitters, a receiver, and the charging case will set you back $329.

Despite DJI drones not being available in the U.S. currently, the DJI Mic 3 is available for purchase.
