As the mirrorless war rages on, Canon is focusing completely on mirrorless lenses in 2019. This means we won’t be seeing any EF lenses from Canon in the coming year.
According to Canon Rumors, Canon will be focusing on releasing up to seven RF mirrorless lenses in 2019. That is to be expected since the company just released its first-ever mirrorless camera. However, Canon has said that there will be no new EF lenses this year.
The news is disappointing, but not surprising
While we’re sure many Canon EF users are disappointed right now, we can’t say that this is surprising news. Mirrorless cameras are the future. All major camera companies are making the move over to mirrorless systems, so it’s only a matter of time until they all are primarily focused on mirrorless. We’re also sure that Canon wants to build up its mirrorless lineup quickly after releasing the EOS R.
Lenses to expect in 2019
Canon Rumors expects up to 7 new RF lenses being announced in 2019. Many though may not begin shipping until early 2020. Here is the rundown of lenses Canon Rumors claims are coming:
- RF 16-35mm f/2.8L 9 (or similar)
- RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS (or similar)
- RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS (or similar)
- RF 105mm f/1.4L
- RF 85mm f/1.4L
- RF 85mm f/1.8 IS STM
- RF Macro lens
- RF non-L kit lens
More lenses to come
While we should be expecting 7 RF Canon lenses in 2019, Canon Rumors says Canon is planning to release at least 15 new RF lenses over the next 30-36 months.
