The Canon CN30x40 IAS J R1/P1 has a focal length range from 40 mm to 1,200 mm. It’s designed for cameras with Super 35 sensors, but the built-in 1.5x extender lets you use it with full-frame bodies too. You can choose between PL or RF lens mounts.
30x zoom
The headline feature of Canon’s new CN30x40 IAS J R1/P1 is its 30x zoom range. That delivers focal lengths from 40 mm to 1,200 mm with native Super 35 coverage.
Engage the built-in 1.5x extender and the range shifts to 60-1,800 mm while opening up full-frame sensor coverage. Canon says the lens delivers detailed 4K and 8K imagery even from extreme distances, with minimal flare and organic color reproduction. The servo unit keeps the angle of view constant during focusing to reduce focus breathing.
Aperture range
With a zoom this long, fast apertures were never going to be in the cards. You get T5.0 from 40 mm to 560 mm, dropping to T10.8 at 1,200 mm. Engage the 1.5x extender and those numbers become T7.5 from 60-840 mm, then T16.2 at 1,800 mm.
Pair the lens with a Canon EOS C400 and you can lean on the camera’s auto exposure ramping compensation to hold image brightness steady while zooming. It works by automatically adjusting the gain to offset T-stop variation across the focal range.

Servo unit
The servo unit delivers ultra-fast zoom, focus and iris control. Lens and servo settings can be set or adjusted through the on-board display menu, and custom configurations can be imported or exported. Broadcast-standard 20-pin interfaces support remote control through zoom and focus demands. A high-res 16-bit digital encoder handles precise virtual data output, the USB-C port provides real-time lens data and external power can be used to increase servo speed.
Other features
Prefer a manual setup? The servo unit can be removed. Precise control rings with 0.8 and 0.5 pitch gears are set up for manual follow focus rigs.
The RF mount version brings intelligent autofocus with subject tracking. Both mount options share the same body diameter at 6.9 inches (174.9 mm) by 6.7 inches (170.6 mm). Length depends on mount. The RF version measures 17.2 inches (437.2 mm), while the PL runs 16 inches (405.2 mm). RF weighs 14.8 pounds (6.7kg). The PL option is slightly lighter at 14.6 pounds (6.6kg).
What we think
The CN30x40 IAS J R1/P1 has a seriously impressive spec sheet. Beyond the phenomenal zoom range, the rugged build is clearly made for field use. That combination fits sports and wildlife shooters well, and the servo unit brings the power zoom and motorized features needed for broadcast or live event production.
This is specialized kit, so expect an eye-watering price to match. For the right working professional, it could be an indispensable tool.
Pricing and availability
The Canon CN30x40 IAS J R1/P1 is expected to ship toward the end of August 2026. Canon hasn’t released pricing details. For reference, the previous CN20x50 IAS H E1/P1 with a 50-1,000 mm zoom range launched at a list price around $78,000. The new lens will almost certainly cost more.
