Congratulations to Blackmagic Design; we’re happy to announce Blackmagic PYXIS 6K as the winner of our Best Cinema Camera of NAB 2024 award.
Blackmagic PYXIS 6K is the new versatile, yet affordable digital film camera
At NAB this week, Blackmagic Design is showing off the brand-new Blackmagic PYXIS 6K. This new digital film camera promises 6K video recording and up to 13 stops of dynamic range. On top of its high-resolution video capabilities, the PYXIS 6K is designed to be easy to rig up for production with its cube-shaped customizable body. Versatile yet affordable, the Blackmagic PYXIS 6K aims to find a home on a wide range of filmmaking sets.
Inside the Blackmagic PYXIS 6K
The PYXIS features a 36x24mm 6K sensor with a native resolution of 6048 x 4032. It records video in standard resolutions and frame rates, including 1080p, DCI 4K and open gate 6K. The top frame rate in 4K and 6K is 60 fps, but you’ll only get 36 fps when shooting open gate. On the other hand, the camera can capture up to 120 fps in windowed Super 16. The camera can also capture 24.6MP photographs.
The impressive resolution of the PYXIS 6K sensor means that the camera can capture 6:5 anamorphic video without cropping. As mentioned, the camera also shoots open gate. This mode produces a taller 3:2 image that can then be reframed and cropped as needed in post-production.
In addition to 13 stops of dynamic range, the camera also promises improved low-light performance with its dual native ISO. The maximum ISO for the PYXIS is 25,600.
On the outside
High up on the features list is the Blackmagic PYXIS’s rig-ready form factor. The new camera offers a plethora of mounting points all over its CNC-machined aluminum body. Blackmagic Design says this makes the camera lightweight yet strong — suitable for mounting to cranes as well as gimbals and even drones. Mounting points include multiple 1/4” and 3/8” thread mounts as well as side plates for mounting handles, microphones or SSDs. All of this makes the PYXIS highly customizable.
This includes the mount, which can be outfitted with an L, an EF or a PL lens mount.
