Viltrox has launched a new autofocus telephoto prime lens for full-frame Nikon Z Mount mirrorless cameras. The Viltrox AF 135mm LAB Z lens has a fast maximum aperture of F1.8.
Optical design
The Viltrox AF 135mm LAB Z lens is designed with 14 lens elements in nine groups. These include four ED (extra-low dispersion) lens elements and two high refractive index lens elements.
Viltrox also says that the lens delivers superb color reproduction and contrast even in strong light. Also, the company claims that the lens has superior chromatic aberration control to minimize purple and green fringing in high-contrast scenes.
F1.8 maximum aperture
This lens has a maximum aperture of F1.8, so it should perform well in low light and have a very shallow depth of field. It also features 11 iris blades for natural, circular bokeh in the out-of-focus parts of your image. Viltrox says the lens delivers the “ultimate soft, dreamy bokeh.” Additionally, the lens features an LCD display to indicate the aperture and focus scale.
Autofocus
The Viltrox AF 135mm LAB Z lens uses dual HyperVCM motors for fast and silent autofocusing. The company says that these deliver 150% faster focusing than traditional STM motors, with micron-level accuracy. You can also focus as close as 2.4 feet (72 cm) for great close-up shots. And, the lens promises near-zero focus breathing.
Build
The lens weighs 2.8 pounds (1,265 g) and measures 3.7 inches (93 mm) in diameter by 5.8 inches (147.6 mm) in length. It features customizable dual Fn function buttons, A-B focus switching, a three-stage focus limiter, and a multifunction ring. The lens is also built for all conditions with a dustproof and splash-resistant design. In addition, the front element has an anti-smudge coating. The filter thread is 82mm.
What we think
135 mm is not a focal length you will use every day, but it’s great for close-ups and portraiture work. With its wide F1.8 aperture, the Viltrox AF 135mm LAB Z lens is ideal for isolating your subject with a very shallow depth of field. It should also perform well in low-light situations.
The function buttons and multi-function ring mean that you can customize the lens to match your workflow. If you use a full-frame Nikon Z Mount camera, the Viltrox AF 135mm LAB Z lens is one to check out.
Pricing and availability
The Viltrox AF 135mm F1.8 LAB Z lens is available now. It retails at $899 but you can pick it up from the Viltrox website for $854 at the time of writing. The lens also comes with a lens hood and storage bag.
