The OFG Customs Long Shot brings full frame lenses to 16 mm filmmaking

Old Fast Glass (OFG) has launched a new adaptor for 16 mm film cameras. The OFG Customs Long Shot is an optical adapter that allows you to use full-frame lenses.

Who is OFG?

Old Fast Glass is a Los Angeles-based rental house that specializes in high-end digital cinema cameras. The company also supplies 35 mm, 16 mm and 8 mm film cameras, along with cinema lenses.

Also, the company boasts a huge selection of professional camera accessories. Old Fast Glass even has two on-site lens test studios where you can try out equipment to make sure you get what you need.

OFG Long Shot

The OFG Long Shot is compatible with full-frame, large format, and Vista Vision lenses. It was designed specifically to use with PL mount 16 mm cameras. Suitable models include ARRI 416, ARRI SR3, AATON Xtera, AATON XTR Prod, AATON Minima and Bolex H16.

Full-frame lenses

The Long Shot delivers the full field of view of full-frame lenses. Importantly, you also get to take advantage of the shallow depth of field of full-frame glass. In addition to spherical lenses, the Long Shot is compatible with full-frame 1.5x anamorphic lenses. This gives you the character and unique bokeh of anamorphic lenses. OFG says that with Super 16 mm film, you get de-squeezed images with a final aspect ratio of 2.49:1. This can be easily cropped to a more standard 2.39:1 widescreen format.

Swapable mounts

The OFG Long Shot comes as standard with OFG’s combo LPL/PL mount. However, it features swapable mounts. Old Fast Glass says that it also has mounts for Canon EF, Nikon F, Canon FD, BNCR, OCT-19 and more. Additionally, the mounts are shimmed so that all of the focus marks on your lenses will be accurate.

Internal exposure control

The Long Shot has its own internal exposure control. OFG doesn’t explain how this works, but the company confirms that it doesn’t affect depth of field or cause any color shift. This is great as it means that you can adjust your exposure when you move from inside to outside without affecting your depth of field.

Plus, Old Fast Glass says that you most likely will not have to worry about using ND filters for brighter scenes.

Other features

The OFG Long Shot has a full cage as standard. This means that you can attach accessories, including focus motors, monitors, EVFs, top handles, range finders and more. The cage supports 15 mm LWS, 15 mm Studio and 19 mm Studio rod systems. In addition, the Long Shot has 3-Pin Fischer ports with remote R/S, as well as 2-Pin ports to power accessories.

What we think

The OFG Long Shot is a unique accessory for shooting on 16mm celluloid film. 16 mm delivers an inherently deeper depth of field than 35 mm or full-frame cameras. This is due to the small frame size of the format. However, Old Fast Glass says that the Long Shot gives filmmakers the full frame look they are used to, but with 16 mm film. The adaptor also opens up a new world of lenses to use with 16mm cameras. For anyone looking to shoot on film, this is an exciting prospect.
