Tamron announces 25-200mm F/2.8-5.6 Di III VXD G2 all-in-one zoom lens

Tamron has announced the successor to its highly acclaimed Tamron 28-200mm F/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD (Model A071) all-in-one zoom lens. The new Tamron 25-200mm F/2.8-5.6 Di III VXD G2 (Model A075) will be available for Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras.

All-in-one zoom

An all-in-one zoom lens is one that covers a range of focal lengths from wide angle to telephoto. As the name suggests, an all-in-one zoom lens is intended to replace the need to take several lenses with you. Tamron was the originator of modern all-in-one zoom lenses and the company says that the new second generation model combines portability with uncompromising performance.

Optical design

The Tamron 25-200mm F/2.8-5.6 Di III VXD G2 zoom lens extends the wide end of the zoom range from 28 mm on the first general model. It delivers an 8x zoom range and is constructed with 18 lens elements in 14 groups. The lens also offers a maximum magnification ratio of 1:1.9 at the 25 mm wide end for half-macro shooting.

Also, the 25-200mm lens features Tamron’s BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) coating to effectively reduce ghosting and flare for sharp, vibrant images.

VXD autofocus

The Tamron 25-200mm zoom lens features VXD (voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive), which Tamron says is its fastest and most precise linear motor focus mechanism to date. It delivers quick and accurate focusing across the entire zoom range with minimal noise. This makes it great for video use, as you don’t need to worry about the zoom motor affecting your audio.

Tamron also says that, compared to the 1st-generation 28-200 mm lens, both autofocus speed and subject tracking have been significantly improved. You can focus down to 6.3 inches (16 cm) at 25 mm and 31.5 inches (80 cm) at 200 mm for great close-ups.

Variable aperture

The Tamron 25-200 mm zoom lens has a wide maximum aperture of F/2.8 at 25 mm. This should deliver a good low-light performance. Unfortunately for video shooters, the lens doesn’t feature a constant aperture. This means that your exposure alters as you change focal lengths, dropping to F/5.6 at 200 mm, a decrease of two stops. With 9 iris blades, you will get a smooth, round bokeh in the out-of-focus parts of your image, however.

Build

Tamron’s 25-200mm zoom lens is a relatively compact lens, measuring only 4.8 inches (121.5 mm) in length. It’s also lightweight, weighing just 20.3 ounces (575 g). The filter size is 67 mm, which is standard across nearly all Tamron mirrorless lenses. In addition, the lens features leak-resistant seals throughout the lens barrel help protect your equipment when shooting outdoors.

What we think

The Tamron 25-200mm F/2.8-5.6 Di III VXD G2 is an ideal all-purpose zoom lens. You can quickly switch between wide-angle and telephoto shots without needing to swap lenses. It’s also relatively light and compact, so you won’t mind carrying it around all day. There’s no image stabilization, but many Sony mirrorless cameras already have this built in, so you won’t miss it. The only negative for video shooters is the variable aperture.

However, maintaining a constant aperture with a 25-200 mm zoom range would result in an impractically large lens. If you don’t mind working around the lack of a constant aperture, the new Tamron 25-200mm is a great option for an all-in-one lens.

Pricing and availability

The Tamron 25-200mm F/2.8-5.6 Di III VXD G2 zoom lens will be launched on November 20, 2025. It will cost $899.
