Sony has announced two new G Master super-telephoto prime lenses for full-frame E-mount cameras. The Sony FE 400mm F4.5 GM and the Sony FE 600mm F6.3 GM both feature optical image stabilization.
World’s lightest design
Each lens weighs around 35 ounces (995 g). According to Sony, that makes them the lightest in their respective categories.
The FE 400mm GM measures 9.5 inches (242 mm) long. At 10.4 inches (263 mm), the FE 600mm GM is a little longer. Both share a 4.3-inch (108 mm) diameter.
Low weight is only half the story. Sony also moved the center of gravity closer to the camera body. That balance makes handheld shooting less tiring. It also helps you hold framing on a moving subject or pan smoothly.
Optical construction
The FE 400mm GM uses 22 elements in 16 groups. Inside the FE 600mm GM are 24 elements in 17 groups. Three Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements plus one ED element keep chromatic aberration in check, a common problem at super-telephoto focal lengths. Sony says both lenses stay sharp from the center of the frame to the edges.
Nano AR Coating II handles ghosting and flare. That matters when you’re shooting into the sun, which happens often with wildlife at dawn or dusk.
Autofocus performance
Two XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors drive focus in each lens. Sony says it tuned the control algorithm specifically for these optics, resulting in fast, precise and quiet AF. Birds in flight, wildlife and sports are the obvious targets. Minimum focus distance is 8.21 feet (2.5 meters).

Optical image stabilization
Built-in Optical SteadyShot stabilizes both lenses. On compatible bodies, they also support in-camera Active Mode along with coordinated stabilization between lens and body. For video shooters, that means usable handheld footage even at 600mm. Both lenses support in-camera focus breathing compensation where the body offers it.
Maximum aperture
The FE 400mm GM opens to F4.5. The FE 600mm GM is a stop slower at F6.3. Both use an 11-blade circular aperture, which Sony says delivers the smooth bokeh G Master lenses are known for.
Other features
Four customizable focus hold buttons sit around each barrel. You also get a function ring, a focus range limiter and a full-time DMF switch. Separate switches control focus mode as well as stabilization mode.
Both lenses are dust- and moisture-resistant. A fluorine coating on the front element helps shed water, dust and fingerprints.
What we think
Sony is promising G Master image quality in the lightest super-telephoto primes on the market. To get there, it capped the maximum apertures. Some shooters will miss the extra light, especially at dawn or indoors.
The trade-off looks reasonable in context. Sony’s FE 400mm F2.8 GM weighs nearly three times as much. It also costs around four times the price.
With stabilization plus a balanced design, both new lenses should hold up well handheld. If you shoot full-frame E-mount and want a super-telephoto prime you’ll actually carry, these belong at the top of your list.
Pricing and availability
The Sony FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS will retail for $2,698. The Sony FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS costs $3,698. Both are scheduled to ship at the end of September.
