Sony has announced that it will be releasing two new CFexpress Type A memory cards in its TOUGH range.
High-capacity
The new Sony CFexpress Type A TOUGH memory cards have capacities of 320 GB and 640 GB. This is much larger than the current cards in the range which are only 80 GB and 160 GB.
High-speed
The CFexpress Type A standard was developed to provide compact cameras with the ultra-high-speed performance required for high-resolution video creation. The new Sony cards both have fast read speeds of up to 800 MB/s. They also have write speeds up to 700 MB/s. These speeds are around twice that of the best SDXC cards.
Video Performance Guarantee
The new Sony CFexpress Type A 320 GB and 640 GB TOUGH memory cards both carry the Video Performance Guarantee (VPG) 400. The VPG400 rating means that you can be sure that the minimum write speed while recording video is at least 400 MBps without dropping any frames.
4K 120p
Sony has optimized its CFexpress Type A cards for continuous, high-bandwidth data writing. This means that they are ideal for high-bitrate video recording, such as 4K 120p capture on cameras like the FX6, FX3, α1 and α7S III.
TOUGH
The new Sony CFexpress Type A TOUGH memory cards aim withstand the rigors of professional use. They have more than ten times greater bend resistance compared to standard CFexpress cards. Their rigidity is also tested to 150 newtons to protect your card data if dropped from a height of 24 feet. This is five times the distance set by the CFexpress Type A standard.
Weatherproof
Sony CFexpress Type A TOUGH memory cards are weatherproof. The company says that they will work faultlessly in extreme temperatures, harsh electrostatic environments and intense UV light or X rays. They also have IP57 dust and moisture ingress protection. Sony claims this means your data is safe even from a drop at the beach or an accidental cycle through the washing machine.
Verdict
The new Sony CFexpress Type A TOUGH memory cards allow you to film for longer. The TOUGH brand also ensures that your valuable data is protected. High-quality professional recording media comes with a premium price tag but what price can you put on your recordings? Losing a day’s footage could be a lot more costly.
Pricing and availability
The new Sony CFexpress Type A 320 GB TOUGH memory card will be available from the end of October. It will retail at $649. The 640 GB card will cost an eye-watering $1249 and should ship at the beginning of December.
