Sony launches new Creators’ App

Sony has launched a new app to allow you to use your smartphone with your Sony Alpha mirrorless camera. The new Creators’ App replaces the company’s Imaging Edge app.

Creators’ Cloud

The new Creators’ App is part of Sony’s Creators’ Cloud. Creators’ Cloud allows you to connect your Sony camera to the company’s cloud AI technology. In addition, you can collaborate with other users from around the world through Creators’ Cloud. When you sign up to become a Creators’ Cloud member you get 5 GB of free cloud storage. However, if you register your Sony camera, your free storage is increased to 25 GB. Sony will also be introducing paid-for 100 GB and 500 GB storage plans in the future.

Creators’ App

With the new Creators’ App, you can access Creators’ Cloud and upload your images and videos to the cloud. You can also access other apps from Sony, such as Master Cut which uses cloud AI technology to assist with video editing. In addition, the Ci Media Cloud app supports collaborative production for teams. Sony has promised access to many more apps as well.

Remote camera access

With the Creators’ App, you can also check your camera’s status from your smartphone. This means you can check the camera battery and media information. You can also set the date, time, or camera name from a smartphone. In addition, you can also shoot remotely using your smartphone as a remote control. With Imaging Edge, you get a remote live view monitor on your smartphone so presumably, the Creators’ App will also have this feature.

What we think

Sony’s Imaging Edge app added great functionality to your Sony mirrorless camera including remote touch focus. Hopefully, Creators’ App will keep all the great functionality from its predecessor and add new cloud-based features as well. The ability to collaborate with other users is also an exciting prospect. Hopefully, Sony will roll out the firmware updates needed to open up the full functionality of the Creators’ App to more Sony camera models as quickly as possible.

Availability

The Creators’ App is available for Android or iOS now. Sony will also be withdrawing Imaging Edge at some point. Unfortunately, at the moment the full features of the app are only available with the Sony Alpha 7 IV and ZV-1F cameras. However, Sony has said that it will update the app and roll out firmware updates for other cameras such as the Sony Alpha 7R V, FX3 and FX30 in the next few months.
