Sony has announced the latest lens in its G Master range. The full-frame Sony FE 50-150mm GM is the world’s first telephoto zoom lens with a maximum focal length of 150 mm and an F2 aperture.
Build
Despite its wide maximum aperture and long focal length range, the Sony FE 50-150mm GM lens is relatively lightweight at only 47.3 ounces (1240g). It measures 7.9 inches (200mm) in length and 4.1 inches (103mm) in diameter. Usefully, the lens offers a manual aperture ring as well as zoom and focus rings. There are also three assignable focus hold buttons, a focus mode switch, an iris lock switch, and a full-time DMF (direct manual focus) switch. In addition, the 50-150mm lens has a robust dust- and moisture-resistant design. There is a fluorine coating on the front element to repel contaminants as well.
Optical design
The Sony FE 50-150mm F2 GM lens is designed with 19 lens elements in 17 groups. These include two XA (extreme aspherical) elements, two Super ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements, and three ED elements. As a result, Sony says that the lens effectively suppresses aberrations, ensuring sharp, high-contrast imagery across the entire zoom range.
Also, the 50-150mm lens features Sony’s proprietary “Nano AR Coating II” applied uniformly across the entire lens surface. The company says that this significantly reduces ghosting and flare even in backlit conditions to deliver clear and crisp imagery.
Constant F2 aperture
The headline feature of the Sony FE 50-150mm GM lens is its wide constant maximum aperture of F2. This will give you a very shallow depth of field as well as great low-light performance. With 11 iris blades, the lens should also deliver a smooth, circular bokeh in the out-of-focus parts of your image. Importantly for video, you can switch off the click stops on the aperture ring. This is essential to ensure smooth changes in exposure while filming.
Autofocus

Sony’s FE 50-150mm F2 GM lens uses four XD (extreme dynamic) linear focus motors. It also uses Sony’s advanced control algorithms to deliver fast, accurate, and quiet autofocus. The lens features Linear Response manual focus which ensures manual focus control is more intuitive. Additionally, the lens is also designed to minimize focus breathing and is compatible with Sony’s Breathing Compensation feature on select Alpha cameras. The close focus distance is 15.7 inches (0.4 meters) at 50mm, and 29.1 inches (0.74 meters) at 150mm.
Other features
This lens uses an internal zoom design. This means that it maintains stability even when you change focal length while it is mounted on a gimbal. It also makes it very balanced when you are shooting handheld. And, the lens comes with a lens hood and a tripod collar.
What we think
The Sony FE 50-150mm F2 GM is an impressive lens. With its sharp image, Sony says that the new zoom is an alternative to carrying around multiple prime lenses. The wide maximum aperture will also be very popular with low-light shooters and anyone who wants a very shallow depth of field.
It’s great to see that the lens has been designed for filmmakers with the clickless aperture ring and focus breathing controls. The Sony FE 50-150mm F2 GM is a premium lens with a premium price tag. However, if you need a fast zoom lens with the highest image quality, you should take a closer look.
Pricing and availability
The Sony FE 50-150mm F2 GM lens will be available in May 2025 for $3,899.
