Sony has announced a new full-frame zoom lens for its E-mount mirrorless and cinema cameras. The Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G standard zoom lens has been designed for high performance and portability.
Constant aperture

The FE 24-50mm G is Sony’s first-ever full-frame F2.8 standard zoom in the G series of lenses. It’s also has a constant F2.8 aperture, so the exposure doesn’t alter as you change the focal length. This is very important for video, especially run and gun shooting. In addition, Sony says that the 11-bladed circular aperture creates the beautiful, smooth bokeh that the G lens series is known for. The lens features an aperture ring to adjust exposure manually. You can switch off the aperture ring click for stepless changes in exposure while recording.
Optical construction
The FE 24-50mm G lens is designed with four aspherical and two Extra Low Dispersion (ED) lens elements. Sony says that these advanced elements effectively minimize chromatic aberration. As a result, the lens delivers high-resolution performance that remains consistent from the center to the corners of the frame. In addition, the lens has been optimized optically to achieve impressive close-up performance at all focal lengths. At 24 mm, the minimum shooting distance is only 7.5 inches (19 cm).
Autofocus
The autofocus system on the FE 24-50mm G lens has two linear motors which deliver extremely fast, precise, and quiet focusing. This also makes the lens ideal for video, especially when shooting in high frame rates like 4K 120p or FHD 240p. The lens supports in-camera Active Mode Image Stabilization and is compatible with Focus Breathing Compensation with some Sony cameras. In addition, the Linear Response MF delivers precise manual focus adjustments, another feature ideal for video.
Compact build

The FE 24-50mm G is a compact lens, measuring 3.63 inches (92.3 mm) in length and 2.94 inches (74.8 mm) in diameter. It’s also lightweight at only 15.52 ounces (440g). The filter size is 67 mm. In addition, the front element of the lens is fluorine-coated. This effectively repels and eliminates fingerprints, dust, water, oil and other contaminants. The body of the lens has a dust and moisture-resistant design, so you don’t have to worry about filming in less than ideal conditions.
What we think
The Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G zoom lens has a lot of great features for video. A constant maximum aperture is a must if you want to change the focal length while filming. Features such as a clickless aperture ring and linear response manual focus are also very welcome. The zoom range is a little limited. However, the payoff is that you get a fast F2.8 aperture in a compact body. If you don’t need longer focal lengths, the Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G could be a great run and gun zoom lens.
Pricing and availability
The new Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G standard zoom lens will be available in May 2024. It will retail at $1,099.
