Sony announces new CFexpress Type B TOUGH memory cards

Sony has announced two new large-capacity high-speed CFexpress Type B memory cards in its G series. The TOUGH memory cards are available in capacities of 240 GB and 480 GB.

Read and write speeds

Both of the new Sony G Series TOUGH CFexpress Type B memory cards have fast read and write speeds. The 240 GB capacity card has a maximum read speed of 1,850 MB/s and a maximum write speed of 1,600 MB/s. With the larger 480 GB card, you get the same maximum read speed of 1,850 MB/s but a slightly faster maximum write speed of 1,750 MB/s. These data speeds will be ideal for shooting high data rate high-resolution video.

Tough and durable

With the TOUGH branding, you can rely on the new G Series CFexpress memory cards to stand up to the rigors of use in the field. Sony also says that the new cards are even more resilient than previous TOUGH products. This is because the new cards have five times greater drop strength and three times greater bendability. In addition, Sony says that they will work flawlessly in extreme temperatures, X-rays, electrostatic and intensive UV sunlight.

Support utilities

Both of the new Sony G Series TOUGH CFexpress Type B memory cards include scan and rescue software applications to give you even more peace of mind. Sony says that the downloadable Memory Card File Rescue app will recover accidentally deleted files in today’s most common formats. In addition, the Media Scan Utility automatically scans the memory card to update you on its condition and storage limit. You will need to buy Sony’s MRW-G1 card reader to run the Media Scan Utility, however.

What we think

Sony has produced another couple of high-capacity high-speed memory cards that you can rely on. The TOUGH branding also reassures you that your data is protected against accidental rough handling in use. All of this data security comes at a premium price and there are certainly cheaper cards on the market. However, losing the footage from a shoot can cost you financially and reputationally. The Sony G Series TOUGH CFexpress Type B memory cards can give you peace of mind that your valuable video files are safe.

Availability

Sony says that the new CFexpress Type B TOUGH memory cards will be available from May 2024. The 240 GB card will retail at $199 and the 480 GB card will cost $319.
