Last year, SmallRig released its Tribex tripod, developed in collaboration with YouTuber and filmmaker Potato Jet. Now the company has announced a smaller, lighter and cheaper model, the SmallRig x Potato Jet Tribex SE hydraulic tripod.
X-Clutch
The headline feature of the SmallRig x Potato Jet Tribex tripod was the X-Clutch hydraulic technology, and SmallRig has included this with the Tribex SE as well. You simply squeeze the clutch handle at the top of the tripod, and the legs drop down to the floor. Then release the handle, and the legs are locked in place at the perfect height. This makes it quick and simple to level off your tripod.
It’s also ideal when setting up your tripod on uneven ground or on steps. It saves a lot of time compared to adjusting each leg in turn, and you can do it all with one hand.
Compact design
The SmallRig x Potato Jet Tribex SE tripod features an aluminum alloy center column and legs. This helps keep the tripod’s weight down to only 8.8 pounds (4 kg), making it a third lighter than the original model. The Tribex SE also has a height range from 9.8 inches (25 cm) to 66.1 inches (168 cm). This is actually a greater height range than the original Tribex tripod, which could only go as low as 10.6 inches (27 cm).
The Tribex SE packs away to only 27.9 inches (71cm) in length. This means that it fits into 28-inch luggage and backpacks.

Tripod head
The SmallRig x Potato Jet Tribex SE tripod head has fixed pan and tilt adjustment, rather than the stepless adjustment on the larger model. You also get a slightly lower maximum payload with the Tribex SE at 13.2 pounds (6 kg). However, the tripod head has been streamlined so that you can switch easily between Manfrotto and DJI RS plates with just one click. Also, there are several 1/4-20 anti-deflection threads for you to mount accessories.
What we think
The X-Clutch technology on SmallRig’s Tribex tripod made it super easy to set up your shots. However, the tripod’s specification was overkill for many mirrorless camera users, which made it heavier as well. The compact and lighter Tribex SE tripod offers a greater range of shooting heights, but in a lighter and more compact package. As a result, it’s going to be a lot more popular with solo shooters and content creators.
In addition, the ability to pack the Tribex SE into your luggage or backpack means you can take it with you more easily every day. If you are looking to get a new tripod, the SmallRig x Potato Jet Tribex SE hydraulic tripod is one to consider.
Pricing and availability
The SmallRig x Potato Jet Tribex SE hydraulic tripod is scheduled to ship in the second half of July 2025. It will retail at $399.
