SIGMA launches the world’s first 10x ultra-telephoto zoom for mirrorless cameras

SIGMA has launched a new lens, the SIGMA 60-600 mm F4.5-6.3 DG DN OS | Sports. The company said it is the world’s first and only high-power 10x ultra-telephoto zoom lens exclusively for full-frame mirrorless cameras. The new lens is available for L-Mount and Sony E-mount cameras.

Sports range

The SIGMA 60-600mm lens is part of the company’s Sports range of lenses. The Sports lenses are designed to capture fast-moving subjects, even at a distance. As such, these lenses are also ideal for recording birds and animals, aircraft and racing cars, etc.

Specification

The SIGMA 60-600mm has a nine-bladed iris which should give a rounded bokeh in out-of-focus areas. The aperture ranges from f4.5 to f22 at 60mm and f6.3 to f32 at 600 mm. The new lens also has SIGMA’s newly developed HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) linear focus motor. The company says the new motor delivers unprecedentedly fast and precise autofocusing.

Optical construction

The SIGMA 60-600mm lens is constructed with 27 elements in 19 groups. These include two ultra-low-dispersion glass and three special low-dispersion glass elements. The angle of view of the lens ranges from 39.6 to 4.1 degrees. In addition, the minimum focus distance is 17.8 inches (45 cm) at 60 mm and 102.4 inches (260cm) at 600 mm.

Image stabilization

The SIGMA 60-600mm lens has optical image stabilization that uses the company’s newly developed OS2 algorithm. SIGMA says this algorithm gives you seven stops of stabilization at 60 mm and six stops at 600 mm. The lens also has two stabilization modes: one is for general use, and the other stabilizes the image while panning. This is ideal for motorsports or wildlife filming.

Build

The SIGMA 60-600mm lens is around 11 inches (280 mm) long and 4.7 inches (120 mm) in diameter. It also weighs around 88 ounces (2.5 kg). In addition, the filter size is 105 mm. The 60-600 mm lens comes with a case, lens hood, tripod socket and end caps. In addition, it has a dust and splash-resistant construction for weatherproofing.

What we think

The SIGMA 60-600mm lens is a specialist lens with a huge zoom range. With such a long lens, it can be difficult to get a stable image even when mounted on a sturdy tripod. However, the high level of image stabilization will ensure that you capture great footage even at 600 mm. If you are a sports or wildlife filmmaker, this lens is ideal.

Pricing and availability

The SIGMA 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 DG DN OS | Sports lens costs $1,999. It will be available from the middle of February.
