Sennheiser has launched the Sennheiser HD 480 PRO, a new flagship closed-back headphone aimed at professional recording and monitoring. The company says it delivers accurate bass reproduction along with long-session comfort. Both are persistent weak spots for closed-back designs.
Design
The closed-back build keeps outside noise out, which matters when you’re tracking audio on location. Sennheiser ships the HD 480 PRO with a detachable nine-foot coiled cable. The detachable design means a damaged cable doesn’t end the headphones. At 9.6 ounces (272 g), the HD 480 PRO sit on the lighter side for a closed-back monitor.
Comfort
Closed-back headphones tend to wear on your head after a few hours. Sennheiser’s answer is its patented Special Axes Geometry, which adjusts contact pressure to fit different head shapes. The ear pads also include grooves to accommodate glasses, a small touch that pays off during long sessions.
Cable routing is flexible too. You can attach the cable to either the left or right ear cup.

Vibration Attenuation System
Sennheiser is pitching the HD 480 PRO as a neutral monitoring tool. The frequency response is meant to be uncolored, with no boosted bass or hyped highs.
Inside the cups, the company’s Vibration Attenuation System works to cut distortion and tame internal reflections. The goal is a cleaner picture of what’s actually in your mix, so the small decisions don’t get lost behind the cans.
Technical specs
The earcups sit at a slight angle to align the transducers with your ears. Driver duties go to neodymium magnets. Frequency response runs from 3 Hz to 28,700 Hz, with a maximum SPL of 130 dB. Sensitivity is rated at 107 dBSPL with an impedance of 130 ohms, which means the HD 480 PRO will run from a decent audio interface without needing a dedicated headphone amp.
What we think
On paper, the HD 480 PRO read like a flagship. The combination of neutral tuning and lightweight comfort points squarely at sound recordists working long days on set. They should also work for mixing in a noisy environment, where bleed from open-back cans isn’t an option.
The detachable cable adds longevity. Replace the cable instead of the headphones when something gives. The price is real, but for anyone whose work depends on hearing audio accurately, the HD 480 PRO earn the consideration.
Pricing and availability
The Sennheiser HD 480 PRO sells for $399 with a carrying bag included. The HD 480 PRO Plus bumps the price to $439 and swaps the bag for a travel case.
