Panasonic has announced the upcoming release of a new Micro Four Thirds mount mirrorless camera, the Panasonic LUMIX G100D. The camera is an updated version of the company’s current G100 model which was designed for vloggers and content creators.
OLED EVF
The Panasonic LUMIX G100D is only a minor update to the G100 model that it is based on. The main new feature is a new electronic viewfinder (EVF). It’s an OLED panel rather than an LCD as in the G100. However, the resolution of the screen in the G100D has decreased to 2.36 million dot screen with 0.74x magnification. This is lower than the EVF in the G100 which had a 3.6 million dot LCD viewfinder with 0.73x magnification.
USB-C port
The other update for the Panasonic LUMIX G100D is that the micro USB port has been replaced with a USB Type-C 2.0 port. This new port supports USD Type-C charging. It should also deliver quicker data transfer to and from the camera.
G100 specification
The original Panasonic LUMIX G100 has a 20.3 megapixel CMOS sensor with electronic image stabilization. You can shoot video up to 30 fps in 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution or up to 60 fps in full HD. There is also the option for slow-motion recording up to 120 fps in HD. In addition, the G100 captures directional audio using three built-in microphones. The camera adjusts the response from each microphone to track the audio from a subject based on the camera’s face detection system.
What we think
The Panasonic LUMIX G100D has been launched quietly by the company which isn’t a surprise given the limited new features. The OLED EVF is to be welcomed but it remains to be seen whether the drop in resolution will negate the improvement in screen quality. Many people felt that the omission of USB-C on the G100 was a mistake by Panasonic, so correcting that with the new model was to be expected. The LUMIX G100D is still a great entry level camera for content creators. However, it doesn’t offer many reasons for current G100 owners to upgrade.
Pricing and availability
The Panasonic LUMIX G100D is scheduled to be available from January 26, 2024, in Japan. Panasonic has said that the camera will also be released in the US and the United Kingdom at the end of January or February 2024. The company hasn’t released pricing details yet, but the current LUMIX G100 model has a list price of $749 including a 12-32 mm zoom lens.
