Storage company ORICO has announced a new high-speed portable SSD. The Montage High Speed Portable SSD is advertised as being part of the 40Gbps series. So, what does the new drive offer?
The Montage High Speed Portable SSD has a USB4 control chip, which has a theoretical transfer rate of 40 Gbps. However, ORICO is claiming that the drive will deliver real-life transfer rates of up to 3100 MB/s. The USB4 interface is also backward compatible, so it will work if your computer only has USB3 or USB2 ports. The transfer rates will, of course, be slower with those interfaces, though.
ORICO’s Montage High Speed Portable SSD supports Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Android, iPad and more without the need for any drivers. The drive comes with a 30 cm multi-purpose 2-in-1 data cable. The cable can connect USB-C to USB-C or USB-C to USB-A.
For capacities, the Montage High Speed Portable SSD is available in 512 GB, 1 TB or 2 TB capacities. The drive is around 4.5 inches long, 2.5 inches wide and just over 0.8 inches deep, with the casing being made from zinc alloy and ABS plastic. The drive case also incorporates a thermal fin to keep the drive cool during long data transfers.
The Montage High Speed Portable SSD case has an eye-catching design inspired by the 1930 painting “Composition of Red, Yellow, and Blue” by Dutch painter Mondrian. The design features a grid made up of black lines with a red, yellow and blue block amongst white blocks. ORICO say that they have used the high-end IML process from the car industry to keep the design from fading and give it a long lifespan.
The Montage High Speed Portable SSD has an impressive specifications on paper. However, bear in mind, you will need a computer with a USB4 interface to take full advantage of the highest transfer speeds. Without any pricing information, it’s also not possible to make any assessment about its value for money.
Pricing and availability
ORICO hasn’t announced when the Montage High Speed Portable SSD or how much it will cost.
