Nikon releases firmware version 2.00 for the Z6III

Nikon has released a major firmware update for its popular Z6III mirrorless camera. Firmware version 2.00 adds a host of new features for video and stills shooters.

Nikon Z6III

The Nikon Z6III launched just over a year ago. One of its unique features was what Nikon called the world’s first partially-stacked CMOS image sensor. This design offers faster data readout to deliver higher frame rate capture for both photography and videography. As a result, the Z6III can record 12-bit 6K N-RAW at up to 60 frames per second and 6K ProRes RAW at up to 30 fps. The camera can also record 10-bit 5.4K ProRes 422 as well as H.265 video formats. Plus, the 6K image sensor allows capture of oversampled 4K UHD/60p video.

Firmware 2.00

One of the new features for video shooters with firmware version 2.00 is Auto Capture. You can select capture criteria from the Motion, Distance, and Subject Detection categories. The Z6 III will then record video automatically when it detects subjects that meet the selected criteria. “Birds” has also been added as a category for autofocus subject detection for both video and stills.

The maximum shooting display zoom ratio is now 400%. Usefully for anyone who uses an Atomos device, you can now include the file names used in the Z6 III when recording videos to an external recorder.

C2PA

C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) is a project to develop technical specifications on content provenance and authentication. Firmware version 2.00 for the Nikon Z6III adds support for the Nikon Authenticity Service. The Nikon Authenticity Service enhances content credibility by using provenance information and other data in accordance with the C2PA standards. Note that you must register with Nikon Imaging Cloud and apply for use of the service. In addition, the Nikon Authenticity Service may not be available in some countries and regions.

Other updates

These are just some of the improvements that Nikon has delivered with firmware version 2.00 for the Z6 III.  There are also new features for playback and for shooting still images. Some controls have been enhanced with added functionality as well.

Also, the camera’s network capabilities have been boosted with the addition of USB streaming (UVC/UAC) to the USB menu. For a full list of new features and bug fixes, check out the new firmware page on the Nikon website.

What we think

The Nikon Z6III is a great mirrorless camera for video shooters. Now with the addition of Auto Capture, you can set the camera to start recording as soon as your subject is detected. This is useful for making sure you don’t miss that all-important shot. Streamers will also be pleased to see the addition of support for the camera as a UVC/UAC device. And, there are lots of other improvements to the camera that will make your life easier. If you own a Nikon Z6III, you should update the firmware as soon as you can.
