New DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro delivers 13.5 stops of dynamic range

DJI has launched the latest generation of its Osmo series of action cameras. The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro promises a 13.5-stop dynamic range and four-hour battery life.

Video shooting

DJI says that the Osmo Action 5 Pro features a next-gen 1/1.3-inch sensor with a 2.4 μm pixel size. This delivers an impressively high dynamic range of up to 13.5 stops. The high dynamic range means that you can capture shadow details without overexposing the highlights when shooting in low light. In addition, the Osmo Action Pro 5 has a SuperNight mode which uses AI noise reduction algorithms to deliver cleaner and clearer footage in extremely low-light environments.

The Osmo Action 5 Pro can record high dynamic range video at up to 60 fps in 4K. You can also shoot super slow motion at up to an incredible 960 fps if you drop the resolution down to 1080p. Images can also be captured in 10-bit D-Log M and support hybrid log-gamma (HLG) high-brightness displays. In addition, the Osmo Action 5 Pro features 47 GB of built-in storage with a further optimized bitrate for smaller file sizes. With a pre-record function of up to 60 seconds, you can even capture moments before the official recording starts.

Subject centering and tracking

DJI says that the Osmo Action 5 Pro is the first action camera to offer built-in subject centering and tracking. The company also claims that this means you can shoot without a gimbal. Powered with a high-performance 4 nm chip and machine learning algorithms, the Osmo Action 5 Pro can intelligently detect your subject’s position. It then dynamically adjusts the composition to keep the subject centered in every frame.

Dual OLED high-brightness touchscreens

The Osmo Action 5 Pro features larger front and rear tempered glass touchscreens upgraded with OLED high-brightness displays. These screens also have a peak brightness of 1000 cd/m2 so they will be easy to see outside in the daytime. In addition, DJI has increased the screen size and narrowed the bezels while retaining the camera body’s size. This means the screen-to-body ratio has increased by 16% from the previous model.

Extended four-hour battery life

The Osmo Action 5 Pro uses a larger 1950 mAh battery. This delivers up to four hours of continuous use with a single charge, which is up 50 percent on its predecessor. As well as the larger battery, the runtime is boosted by a lower power consumption 4 nm chip. DJI has also implemented a proprietary algorithm that optimizes for energy savings. In addition, the new battery can deliver two hours of shooting from only a 15-minute charge with the fast-charging DJI 30W USB-C charger.

Waterproof without a case

The Osmo Action 5 Pro offers the industry’s deepest waterproofing depth at up to 65 feet (20 meters) without a case. The built-in color temperature sensor captures true-to-life colors under the sea. You can also set the camera to record automatically once it is submerged and to stop after you surface. In addition, the Osmo Action 5 Pro has a built-in pressure gauge to record underwater depth, duration, and altitude data to help keep you safe. The camera is even certified with EN13319, so it meets globally recognized standards for diving accessories.

Other features

The Osmo Action 5 Pro can connect directly to the DJI Mic 2 Transmitter via Bluetooth, enabling ultra-high-sampling-rate audio recording. It also features Wi-Fi livestreaming and high-speed transfer up to 80MB/s via Wi-Fi 6.0 or USB 3.0. In addition, the Osmo Action 5 Pro supports timecode so you can quickly synchronize footage from multiple cameras.

Mimo app

You can connect the Osmo Action 5 Pro with the DJI Mimo app via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Using the app, you can preview the camera view, adjust settings, and edit your footage. You can also take live photos and capture 4K high-resolution frames. In addition, you can reproduce D-Log M flat color profiles for more stylized adjustments and export 4K 120 fps videos with a 4:3 aspect ratio.

What we think

With the launch of the Osmo Action 5 Pro, DJI has set new standards for the image quality from an action camera. The camera’s 13.5 stops of dynamic range rival the image quality of many cinema cameras. As a result, the Osmo Action 5 Pro will be able to deliver video with more detail in the shadows while still retaining the highlights. However, you still get all the robust benefits of an action camera, including the ability to shoot underwater without a case. If you are looking to buy an action camera, the new DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro should be on your shortlist.
