New Apple Mac Pro pairs incredible specs with retro design

Leaving the trash can design for a more cheese-grater look, the new Mac Pro is a computer looking to satisfy pro video creators with demanding workflows.

CPU performance

Right in the center to the system is the new Intel Xeon processor, which provides the 28 cores of power. The is the most cores even seen in a Mac. With up to 28 cores of power, Apple claims the new Mac Pro is designed for “pros who need the ultimate in CPU performance.” The system should be powerful enough to handle taxing rendering and even play hundreds of virtual instruments.

Plus, the system comes with up to 300W of power and heavy-duty cooling. There are eight PCI Express slots. Four of those are double-wide for larger expansion cards. On the rear of the system, there’s two USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 and two USB-A ports. On the top there is two more USB-C / TB3 ports.

Memory

For the memory, the 2019 Mac Pro has six channels of ECC memory and 12 physical DIMM slots. In total, the system offers up to 1.5TB of memory and up to 140GB/s memory bandwidth. It also uses a two-sided logic board.

Custom expansion module

Along with the new Mac Pro, Apple’s releasing a custom expansion module called an MPX Module. The MPX Module is a quad-wide PCIe card that fits two graphics cards, has its own dedicated heat sink, and also has a custom Thunderbolt connector.

Apple will also sell a “Afterburner” dedicated video editing card. It uses an FPGA to process up to 6 billion pixels per second.

Design

Inside of its interesting design, there’s three large fans at the front. It will blow air across the system at a rate of 300 cubic feet per minute. There’s a blower also. Dispite all this, Apple says the computer is silent.
