Kino Pro Video Camera for iPhone app now supports Apple Log 2

Kino Pro Video Camera was awarded iPhone app of the year in 2024. Now Lux, the company behind the app, has given it another boost by adding support for Apple Log 2.

Kino Pro Video Camera

Lux says that with the Kino Pro Video Camera app you can shoot cinematic video with just one tap. That’s because Kino creates videos using color presets from some of the best experts in the field. You can choose between presets by Evan Schneider, Tyler Stalman, Stu Maschwitz, Sandwich Video, Kevin Ong and Sebastiaan de With. Alternatively, you can import your own LUTs. In addition, Kino gives you pro shooting tools including focus peaking, waveform for exposure and full manual control. You can record in professional file formats such as Apple Log ProRes 422HQ with some iPhones as well.

Apple Log 2

Lux has just released Kino version 1.4.0. The headline new feature is the addition of support for Apple Log 2. Apple Log 2 is a new format that was launched alongside the iPhone 17 Pro. It is designed to provide unique real color ranges best suited for Apple’s sensors. This is an improvement on the original Apple Log format that specified color ranges identical to HDR televisions. As a result, Apple Log 2 will give better color results, in particular delivering more color in deep blues and purples. Additionally, it’s useful for niche situations, like filming under neon lights or blue stage lighting.

What we think

Apple’s iPhone Pro and Pro Max smartphones have great video capabilities. From the iPhone 15 Pro onwards, you can also record ProRes video to an external SSD over USB-C. The option to shoot in Apple Log 2 gives you even better results, with greater dynamic range. You also have much more scope to color grade your video clips to create truly cinematic footage. The Kino Po Video Camera app gives you the professional shooting tools you would expect from a cinema camera to make your iPhone video experience even better. Now, the addition of Apple Log 2 makes Kino even more attractive. If you own the app, you should upgrade as soon as you can. If you don’t yet own the app and shoot video on your iPhone, you should check out the Kino webpage to see what the app can do for you.

Pricing and availability

The Kino Pro Video app is available from the Apple App store now. Version 1.4.0 costs $9.99 if you are a new user, or as a free update if you already own the app.
