Insta360 reveals new Ace Pro 2 action camera

Insta360 has announced the latest action camera in its Ace series. The new Insta360 Ace Pro 2 has been coengineered with Leica and features upgraded audio along with an improved rugged design.

Coengineered with Leica

Insta360 says that the Ace Pro 2 delivers some serious performance upgrades. The new camera has been coengineered with Leica and features a Leica Summarit lens with a 157-degree field of view. Combined with a new 1/1.3-inch 8K sensor delivering up to 13.5 stops of dynamic range, this promises some very impressive images. In addition, the Ace Pro 2 is the first action camera with a dedicated Pro Imaging Chip that handles image processing and noise reduction. There is also a separate 5 nm AI Chip that handles further image processing and overall camera performance.

Video recording

Insta365 says that the dual-chip design of the Ace Pro 2 enables more video shooting modes and higher specifications. As a result, the new action camera can record video all the way up to 8K at 30 frames per second (fps). You can also shoot active high dynamic range (HDR) video up to 4K at 60 fps or regular 4K up to 120 fps for super slow motion. In addition, the Ace Pro 2 features upgraded PureVideo. PureVideo is a specialized shooting mode powered by a complex, custom-trained AI neural network. The feature reduces noise and enhances details in real time for cleaner, brighter images, even in extremely low light.

Ready for action

An action camera is designed to capture videos that a regular camera couldn’t, and the Ace Pro 2 delivers here as well. Insta360 has improved the design to be even more rugged and ready for all conditions. The Ace Pro 2 is now waterproof down to depths of 39 feet (12 meters). You can also increase this to 197 feet (60 meters) with the optional Dive Case. In addition, the camera can handle temperatures as low as -4ºF (-20ºC). There’s a new removable Lens Guard for increased protection and an all-new Wind Guard that you can snap on to improve your audio.

FlowState stabilization

The Ace Pro 2 uses Insta360’s FlowState Stabilization technology to keep your videos smooth and stable. It also applies 360º Horizon Lock in-camera to ensure your video stays level. In addition, the Ace Pro 2 features a larger 1800 mAh battery with an Endurance Mode. This delivers a 50% longer runtime at 4K 30 fps than with the previous generation Insta360 Ace Pro. With fast charging, you can power the battery to 80% in 18 minutes or 100% in only 47 minutes, so you won’t need to wait around for your next shot.

Other features

The Ace Pro 2 features a larger 2.5-inch flip touchscreen. This new screen also delivers a 70% increase in pixel density, a 6% increase in brightness and a 100% increase in flip durability. As a result, you can frame up and preview your video, even in bright sunlight. The Ace Pro 2 also offers gesture and voice control for remote operation and pre-recording up to 120 seconds. In addition, you can use timecode to synchronize recordings from multiple cameras. Insta360 has expanded the camera’s compatibility with third-party sports accessories as well. This means you can overlay your video with real-time stats from brands including Garmin, Apple and COROS.

What we think

Insta360 has delivered some impressive new features and performance upgrades with the Ace Pro 2. The new Leica lens and improved sensor with 13.5 stops of dynamic range should deliver great image quality. PureVideo mode also promises great video even in low light. In addition, with its rugged build quality, you can rely on the Ace Pro 2 to keep shooting even under challenging conditions. Even without the optional Dive Case, the action camera will be more than enough for most water sports enthusiasts. If you are looking to get a new action camera, the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 should be on your shortlist.

The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 is available to buy now. It’s priced at $399 and comes with the Wind Guard, a battery, a standard mount, a mic cap, and a USB-C cable. For $419 you can also buy a dual battery bundle that adds a second battery.
