Insta360 app update looks to deliver smarter AI for easier 360º editing

Insta360 has released what it is calling a “huge update” to its editing app. The new Insta360 app delivers lots of improvements as well as more than 40 preset movement templates to make your editing easier. The updates are available for all 360º footage from Insta360 cameras, including X4, X3, X2 and RS with the 360º lens.

Automatic scene recognition

Insta360 says that the automatic scene recognition feature lets you create immersive stories in seconds. The Insta360 app uses AI to identify the objects or subjects in your video footage and the interaction between them. It also recognizes what type of video you have shot, such as a winter sports or travel video. Combining all this, the AI in the Insta360 app then filters the best shots for you to choose and export. Insta360 says, “Instead of just identifying a child and parent, the app can identify the interaction between them to create a story. Amazing, right?”

Automatic movement templates

The Insta360 app now has more than 40 automatic movement templates to help you create dynamic videos. You can use the templates to automatically create movements such as roll, pan and push between keyframes. To add a movement, you simply tap the yellow + icon at the start point. You can then adjust the perspective, tap “Movement” and choose a template. In addition, you make the movement as slow or as fast as you want and adjust the perspective of the endpoint. Your video should smoothly transition between the points with a dynamic movement. You can also add and modify movements in AI Edit and Pro Edit on the Insta360 app.

What we think

The update to the Insta360 app adds some great new features. Using AI to select clips with an understanding of the subjects and their interaction is a great way to speed up your edits. In addition, you can use the movement templates to add energy to your videos with a few simple taps. For many users, the updated Insta360 app may be all you need to create your 360º content.

Pricing and availability

The new Insta360 app is available as a free download for Android and iOS now.
