Insta360 announces new GO 3S 4K action camera — and it’s tiny

Insta360 has announced the latest addition to its GO range of action cameras. The Insta360 GO 3S has the same tiny form factor as previous GO 3 models. However, the new camera adds 4K video recording along with several other upgrades.

The headline new feature of the Insta360 GO 3S is 4K recording, delivering double the number of pixels compared to 2.7K. You can now shoot up to 30fps in 4K for videos that are sharper, clearer, and crisper. Insta 360 also says that the new camera is powered by an enhanced chip with 50% more CPU computing power. If you want super slow motion, you can record up to 200 fps at 1080p or 100fps at 2.7K.  In addition, Insta360’s FlowState Stabilization and Horizon Lock aims to keep your footage super smooth and level.

The Insta360 GO 3S has a new wide-angle lens with a focal length equivalent to 16 mm on a full-frame camera. It also has a wide F2.8 aperture so should do well in low-light conditions. Other improvements to the image quality from the camera include a new MegaView FOV (field of view). Inta360 says that this gives a more realistic look with less distortion and straighter, cleaner edges. In addition, the GO 3S is Dolby-vision ready, which should deliver a greater dynamic range and enhanced details thanks to this new HDR technology.

Size and build

Size-wise, the Insta360 GO 3S measures just 1 inch by 2.1 inches by 1 inch (25.6 mm by 54.4 mm by 24.8 mm). It also weighs a feather-light 1.38 ounces (39.1 g). Despite its tiny size, the GO 3S battery delivers up to 38 minutes of runtime. The camera is also waterproof to 33 feet (10 meters), which is more than double the rating of the GO 3. In addition, GO 3S features AI gesture control. This means you can use hand gestures to start and stop recording when the camera is out of reach.

Action Pod

The Action Pod is unchanged from GO 3, so if you already own one, it’s compatible with the GO 3S. By combining the GO 3S with the Action Pod you get an extended run time of up to 140 minutes. You also get a 2.2-inch touchscreen to preview your shots. This feature works whether the camera is in the Action Pod or mounted separately which is great.  In addition, the magnetic mounting mechanism fits both the camera and the Action Pod. This means you can use the same accessories, no matter how you shoot.

Accessories and Insta360 app

The Insta360 GO 3S comes with a great range of accessories. These include a magnetic pendant so you can snap on the camera for easy first-person views. There’s also an Easy Clip which is great for attaching the camera to places like your pet’s collar. In addition, you can mount the Pivot Stand anywhere you want with its reusable sticky base. The GO 3S has a new Lens Guard with a curved design that should better its image quality.

Moving on to the app, the Insta360 app features background downloading. This means you can keep using your phone’s other apps, and you’ll get a notification when the files are ready to watch. The app also includes powerful AI editing features to edit your best clips into ready-to-share reels automatically. However, you still get a full editing suite if you want to edit your videos yourself. In addition, you can overlay GPS, speed and power data from your Garmin device or Apple Watch in your videos.

What we think

The Insta360 GO 3S is a great action camera that just got a lot better with the addition of 4K video. When you are using the camera on its own, it’s absolutely tiny. This means you can clip it on your hat or shirt, and you won’t even know it’s there. However, you can combine it with the Action Pod for a more conventional action camera form factor. The ability to review your videos on the Action Pod even when it’s remote from the camera is also a very useful feature. If you are looking for a new action camera, the Insta360 GO 3S is one to check out.
