For years, people have been asking for Canon to put an RF mount on a Cinema EOS camera. That way future lenses can utilize its short flange depth. Well, Canon has just announced its first-ever RF mount Cinema EOS camera: the EOS C70 4K Digital Cinema Camera.
Let’s cover everything you need to know about the C70.
The EOS C70 has a small form factor
The Canon EOS C70 looks to put a huge emphasis on user convenience. Its form-factor appears to be small and weighs just 2.6 lbs. The camera shouldn’t be hard to hold, allowing for high mobility. According to Canon, the C70 is able to “bridge between the EOS and Cinema EOS families for cinematic applications.” Additionally, the camera features a motorized ND filter unit with a short 6 mm depth. This is a 10-stop ND filter, grating users some flexibility when controlling their exposures with their desired depth-of-fields. It’s built into the short flange back of the RF mount.
Inside the Canon EOS C70
Canon has fitted the EOS C70 with its next-generation uper 35mm DGO Sensor. The sensor should extend the high dynamic range and lower the noise levels. It does this by reading out each photodiode with two different gains. The first gain focuses on saturation and the second suppresses noise in the shadows.
Video shooting
Thanks to the sensor and its focus on higher HDR and lower noise levels, the EOS C70 is capable of shooting an image with up to 16-plus stops of total dynamic range in up to 4K/ 60p or 2K/120p in Super 16mm Crop mode. Also, the camera features the Canon DIGIC DV7 image processor that collects info captured from the DGO sensor. Users have the choice to use either Canon Log 2 and 3, in addition to PQ and HLG gamma functionality.
Additionally, the C70 can also record 4K DCI or UHD up to 120 fps and 2K DCI or HD up to 180 fps. It also supports XF-AVC format, both in Intra and Long GOP with MXF file format.
Design
To keep the camera safe, its air intake system is separate from the electrical system to protect the sensor from water, sand, and dust. Also, the camera has two air outlet vents to allow for uninterrupted recording for long periods of time.
