DJI Osmo Mobile 8P turns its screen into a remote

DJI has launched its latest gimbal for smartphones. The DJI Osmo Mobile 8P offers pro features such as framing and tracking to take your video to the next level. You can also shoot remote-controlled selfies with the detachable Osmo FrameTap.

Three-axis gimbal

The DJI Osmo Mobile 8P is a 3-axis gimbal. It uses DJI’s eighth-generation stabilization technology for super steady video. At only 13.6 ounces (386 g), it’s lightweight enough to carry all day. Battery life still reaches up to 10 hours.

An 8.5-inch (215 mm) extension rod and built-in tripod round out the hardware. The tripod opens wider than the previous model for extra stability. You can capture panoramic shots with 360° Infinite Spin or low-level shots by tilting the pan axis forwards.

Updated tracking

Tracking comes courtesy of the Multifunctional Module 2, which handles people and pets. It can also keep objects such as cars and landmarks centered in your frame. ActiveTrack 8.0 works with the DJI Mimo app, so you can keep your subject centered even in crowded environments such as concerts or sporting events. Alternatively, the Osmo Mobile 8P supports Apple DockKit, so iPhone creators can track subjects through their native camera app.

Osmo FrameTap

The screen on the Osmo Mobile 8P is a detachable remote called the Osmo FrameTap. You can use it to take a rear-camera selfie or direct a shot from a distance. Its screen mirrors the view from your smartphone or the Osmo Mobile 8P’s Multifunctional Module 2. A built-in joystick gives you precise control of the gimbal’s movement and zoom. You can also use the remote to adjust the brightness and temperature of the fill light on the Multifunctional Module 2.

Creative modes

With the DJI Mimo app, you can access a range of cinematic modes. These include Dynamic Zoom for classic dolly zoom shots, with Move In and Move Out options. Slow Shutter captures light trails at night. Action Shot keeps fast-paced subjects such as athletes or dancers centered in your frame. Finally, Widescreen mode records directly in classic 2.35:1 format, so you don’t need to crop in post-production.

What we think

The DJI Osmo Mobile 8P is a great low-cost gimbal for smartphone shooters. It offers DJI’s most advanced stabilization algorithms in a lightweight form factor, with a battery that still lasts all day. The Osmo FrameTap remote control is an ideal tool for content creators who need to film themselves. Multifunctional Module 2 delivers accurate tracking across a range of subjects. If you need to film with your smartphone on the move, the Osmo Mobile 8P earns its place in your kit. Hopefully DJI will find a way to sell the gimbal in the U.S. soon.

Pricing and availability

At the time of writing, there has been no word on a U.S. launch of the DJI Osmo Mobile 8P. This is due to the U.S. government’s ongoing ban on DJI products. However, in the EU, the basic gimbal costs 159 euros. If you want the Multifunctional Module 2 as well, you need the Advanced Tracking Combo at 189 euros. These prices equate to around $187 and $223 respectively, before tariffs.
