DJI has launched its latest wireless microphone system, the ultra-lightweight DJI Mic Mini. The Mic Mini can be used with cameras, smartphones and can also connect to DJI’s OsmoAudio ecosystem.
DJI Mic Mini
The DJI Mic Mini is a two-channel wireless microphone system that has two transmitters with built-in microphones and a receiver. The components come in a charging case that also stores the mobile phone adapters and windscreens for the mics. You can even store the transmitters in the charging case with the windscreens attached. Alternatively, you can also buy a set with one transmitter and receiver. That doesn’t come with the charging case.
Transmitters
DJI’s Mic Mini transmitters certainly live up to the mini moniker. They are ultra-lightweight, weighing around one-third of an ounce (10 g). The transmitters are also tiny, measuring around an inch square (26.55 mm by 26.06 mm) and 0.6 inches (15.96 mm) deep. You can attach them with the included clips or magnetic attachments or even wear them on a lanyard. The transmitters are so light they won’t distort your subject’s clothing.
Receiver
The DJI Mic Mini receiver is compatible with cameras, smartphones, computers and tablets. If you connect it to your camera with the 3.5 mm TRS audio cable, the receiver supports synchronized power on/off with the camera. Also, when connected to a smartphone, you get external playback without unplugging the receiver. Your smartphone can even charge the receiver. In addition, there is a dial on the receiver so you can quickly adjust the gain in five levels.
Using the Mic Mini
In use, the DJI Mic Mini has a transmission range of up to 1,300 feet (400 meters). DJI also says that the system has powerful anti-interference capabilities to keep your recording stable and high quality even in outdoor environments like a busy street or crowded events.
In addition, the system supports mono and stereo recording. This means that the audio captured by the two transmitters can be output separately or combined into a single track.
Noise reduction
The DJI Mic Mini offers two noise cancellation levels to suit different environments. The Basic setting is useful for quiet indoor settings. It can reduce fan, air conditioning and reverb noises while preserving vocal clarity.
Alternatively, the Strong mode is designed for noisy environments, significantly cutting ambient noise for clearer vocals. You can also enable automatic limiting so that the DJI Mic Mini automatically lowers the volume if the audio input is too high. This prevents clipping and ensures reliable audio quality.
DJI Mimo app
Using the DJI Mimo app with the Mic Mini adds even more functionality. You can enable a safety track in the DJI Mimo app so the DJI Mic Mini can record in dual tracks. The main track records at normal volume, while the second track records at six dB lower to protect your audio from clipping. You can also use the app to set the transmitter and receiver to automatically power off after a period of inactivity.
OsmoAudio
The microphone is fully compatible with DJI’s OsmoAudio ecosystem. You can connect the Mic Mini transmitters directly with the Osmo Action 5 Pro, Osmo Action 4 or Osmo Pocket 3 without needing the receiver. In addition, you can use Bluetooth to connect Mic Mini to your smartphone, again bypassing the need for the receiver. You can also connect DJI Mic Mini via Bluetooth to the DJI Fly app to record audio with the DJI Neo drone.
Battery life
The DJI Mic Mini charging case provides an incredible 48 hours of continuous use. You can even get an hour’s use of the system after only five minutes of charging. To fully charge the receiver and transmitters takes around 90 and 100 minutes respectively.
Once fully charged, the transmitters will run for 11.5 hours, and the receiver will last 10.5 hours. In addition, the transmitters will automatically enter sleep mode when they don’t detect a signal from the receiver. This saves power and means you don’t need to keep powering the mics on and off.
What we think
The DJI Mic Mini is an ideal portable audio solution for content creators. If you go for the two-transmitter model, everything fits into the included charging case so it’s handy to transport. The system also promises the usual high-quality audio you can expect from a DJI mic. In addition, the ability to connect via the OsmoAudio ecosystem or Bluetooth makes the Mic Min exceptionally versatile. If there’s one downside, it’s that you don’t get onboard backup recordings as with some more expensive systems. However, the tiny size of the transmitters and low price make the DJI Mic Mini a great option if you are looking for an easy-to-use wireless mic system.
