DJI Flip launches new Flip vlog camera drone

DJI has launched a new drone aimed at content creators and first-time pilots. The DJI Flip features full-coverage propeller guards for safety and a unique folding design.

Compact design

The DJI Flip comes in at under 249 g. This means that it doesn’t need to be registered with the FAA for recreational operations. It also doesn’t need to be Remote ID compliant. Even better, the Flip’s four propellors fold down on top of each other making it very compact to carry around.

In addition, the full-coverage guards around each propeller help avoid injury or damage to the drone. The guards are made of carbon fiber string which means that they are only one sixtieth of the weight of traditional polycarbonate guards. However, they maintain the same stiffness and durability to ensure safe flights.

Camera

The DJI Flip has a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor with a dual native ISO function. It also features a wide f/1.7 aperture and 2.4 μm 4-in-1 pixels. You can record HDR video at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second. The Flip also supports slow-motion recording at 4K/100 fps and 10-bit D-Log M color mode. The sensor has a 4:3 aspect ratio so you can crop for vertical video and record in 2.7K resolution as well. Still photographs can be captured up to 48 MP and with a 4x zoom.

Intelligent shooting modes

Similar to the DJI Neo, the Flip can be used without a controller or app. With one tap of the mode button, you can select from six intelligent shooting modes. These include Dronie, Circle, Rocket, Spotlight, Helix and Boomerang. You can also use the intelligent tracking mode to have the drone follow you and keep you in the frame.

With MasterShots, the Flip will automatically perform diverse camera movements and edit the clips together into a sequence. There are also four Hyperlaspe modes, as well as three creative ways to follow your subject with FocusTrack.

Other features

The DJI Flip’s Intelligent Flight Battery delivers up to 31 minutes of flight time. In addition, the Parallel Charging Hub charges two batteries simultaneously to reduce charging times. You can operate the Flip with the DJI RC-N3 or RC 2 remote controllers. When paired with these controllers, DJI’s O4 video transmission supports up to 13 km of 1080p/60 fps video transmission. Alternatively, you can control the Flip with the DJI Fly app or even Voice Control for hands-free flying. When connected to your phone, the drone can capture audio and will intelligently filter out propeller noise.

What we think

The DJI Neo offered an easy solution for content creators and drone newbies to capture great aerial videos. Unfortunately, many people feel that the drone doesn’t deliver high enough quality for serious use. However, the DJI Flip promises all the ease of use of the Neo with much better image quality. In addition, the Flip has features such as automatic braking to make it even safer to use, for you and the drone. Serious drone enthusiasts will want the advanced features of drone such as the DJI Mini Pro 4. However, content creators and casual fliers will love the DJI Flip.

Pricing and availability

The DJI Flip is available now and costs $439. It’s also available with a DJI RC 2 controller for $639 and in the Fly More Combo pack for $779.
