Dell has launched an enormous new ultrawide curved monitor. The company says that the Dell UltraSharp 52 Thunderbolt Hub Monitor is the world’s first 52-inch ultrawide curved 6K monitor.
Replace multiple monitors
Dell says that its UltraSharp 52 Thunderbolt Hub Monitor is designed for financial traders, data scientists, engineers and executives who manage multiple applications simultaneously. However, it would be ideal for video editing, color grading and VFX work where you need space for your timeline and various other bins and windows to be open at the same time.
Dell says that compared to a setup with two 27-inch QHD monitors and one 43-inch 4K monitor, the 52-inch monitor offers 61,000 more pixels and 25% higher pixel density. Even better, it uses less physical space on your desktop.
6K resolution
The Dell UltraSharp 52 Thunderbolt Hub Monitor has a 52-inch 21:9 aspect ratio screen with a curvature of 4200R. This means it has a curve equivalent to that of a circle with a radius of 4.2 meters (13.8 feet). The monitor has a 6,144 pixel by 2,560 pixel 6K resolution 120Hz screen with 129 pixels per inch. It also features IPS Black technology which delivers a 2000:1 contrast ratio for richer blacks and sharper visuals. In addition, the UltraSharp 52 Monitor is designed for eye comfort, emitting up to 60% less blue light compared to competitors while maintaining professional-grade color accuracy. 99% DCI-P3 and Display P3 color coverage with Delta E <1.5 again make it ideal for video editing. Its ambient light sensor helps ensure your eyes stay comfortable during long work sessions as well.
Connectivity
The Dell UltraSharp 52 Thunderbolt Hub Monitor has a wealth of connection options. You can connect up to four PCs simultaneously and control them all with one keyboard and mouse via the built-in KVM switch. The monitor’s new internal multi-stream transport feature works in conjunction with picture-by-picture to treat each partitioned screen as an individual monitor. There are also two HDMI ports, two DisplayPort ports, a Thunderbolt port and an Ethernet port.
There are three 10 Gps USB-C upstream and two USB-C 10 Gbps downstream ports with power delivery up to 27 W. Finally, you get five USB Type-A 10 Gbps downstream ports, one of which features Battery Charging 1.2.
What we think
The Dell UltraSharp 52 Thunderbolt Hub Monitor is a fabulously large screen. While Dell is marketing it towards business users, it would be a perfect screen for video editors and other creatives. As well as displaying an extended timeline, you can have file bins, effects windows, color grading scopes, and more, all clearly visible at the same time.
Additionally, with 99% DCI-P3 and Display P3 color coverage you should get pretty good results without the need for an external calibrated display. The only challenges with the Dell UltraSharp 52 Thunderbolt Hub Monitor are the premium price and the need for a substantial workspace. If those factors aren’t an issue, then Dell’s new display is a very attractive prospect.
Pricing and availability
The Dell UltraSharp 52 Thunderbolt Hub Monitor will be available globally from Jan. 6 and retails at $2,899 with a stand. If you don’t want the stand, you can save yourself $100.
