Datacolor is releasing a new Datacolor LightColor Meter. This is a multi-functional device that measures both light levels and color temperature for any light source.
LightColor meter
Datacolor’s new LightColor Meter combines the functionality of a light meter and color meter into a single device. Traditionally, you would need a dedicated meter for each function. The LightColor Meter measures both the light and color temperature for any light source. This includes changing outdoor light, tungsten, LED, HMI, fluorescent and strobe sources.
The LightColor Meter includes filter libraries from Profoto, LEE and Rosco to help you choose the right color-correcting gels for your lights.
Free app
You can connect Datacolor’s new LightColor Meter to your iOS or Android smartphone via Bluetooth. It will then continuously stream data to the free Datacolor LightColor Meter app for remote flexibility and accuracy.
You can also easily fine-tune lighting and exposure without leaving your camera. In addition, you can sync multiple LightColor Meters for simultaneous readings from several locations.

Precise data in real-time
“The Datacolor LightColor Meter is like a portable on-set Personal Assistant. Its wireless feature eliminates the need to run to and from your camera to your metering location while receiving precise light and color temperature data in real-time, even in shifting light conditions such as those outdoors,” said Heath Barber, Director of Product Management, Consumer at Datacolor. “The LightColor Meter takes the guesswork out of exposure settings for those new to using a light meter, and experienced users will appreciate the added advantage of being able to measure color temperature and DUV, as well as light, with one powerful and convenient product.”
What we think
Most cameras that shoot video include a range of tools to help you set the correct exposure. These include histograms, false color, and zebras. As a result, many filmmakers don’t see the need for using a separate light meter. However, with a meter you can measure the exposure as you light a scene, without the talent or a having camera set up It’s also much easier to control the contrast ratios between your key, fill, and background lights when using a meter.
Additionally, a color meter ensures that you can accurately match your lights to the practical fixtures or natural light at a location. Datacolor’s LightColor Meter combines both meters into one device for convenience. In addition, the Bluetooth-connected app adds extra functionality and ease of use. If you are looking for a new light meter, or to upgrade your current device, Datacolor’s LightColor Meter is a great choice.

The Datacolor LightColor Meter is available now and retails at $399. The Datacolor LightColor Meter app is available free of charge.
