Canon is targeting the prosumer market at CES 2019, announcing the VIXIA HF G50, along with the consumer VIXIA HF W11 and HF W10 camcorders.
The G50 is the first VIXIA G-series camcorder to have 4K 30P shooting. Lens-wise, it features a genuine wide-angle Canon 20x optical zoom lens. The ideal audience for this camcorder would fall into the advanced amateur filmmaker lane, but wedding videographers and student journalists could find the G50 useful as well.
With these features to set it apart, the Canon VIXIA HF G50 is our pick for Best Camera of CES 2019. Congratulations Canon!
“As filmmaking and videography continue to grow into a more ubiquitous medium of visual expression, it is imperative that creatives have products that help capture their unique vision,” said Kazuto Ogawa, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “Not only is Canon eager to view what our users create with the VIXIA HF G50, we are excited to be with them along the way as their skills and ideas further evolve into the future.”
The W11 and W10 camcorders are on more of the consumer side. Both shoot Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution video and are ruggedly designed. They’re waterproof, shockproof, dustproof, and can operate at low temperatures.

Recording
As stated previously, Canon’s G50 records 4K UHD/30p (4:2:0 8 bit) and 1080p (4:2:2 10 bit via SDI/HDMI Output) video. It records in MP4 format to dual-card SD card slots with dual and relay recording. Also, it can record in slow and fast motion interval for 0.4x to 1200x.
With a 4K 1/2.3-inch sensor and Digic DV 6 image processor, the G50 can also use over sample HD processing for improved image quality.
Stabilization
The camcorder’s five-axis Intelligent Optical Image Stabilization system gives users image stabilization through Dynamic mode. Canon says the system will reduce image distortion while even walking.
Design
The system features an 8-blade circular aperture, and Canon claims “it is possible to take pictures using natural beautiful bokeh.” Additionally, it has a 3-inch LCD touch panel screen and tilting, high-resolution color Electronic View Finder (EVF).
Pricing and availability
The VIXIA HF G50 4K UHD camcorder will be released this April for $1099.
VIXIA HF W11 and HF W10

Recording
Canon’s W11 and W10 aren’t prosumer cameras. They shoot AVCHD Full HD video and have a 40x optical and 60x digital zoom lens. These cameras are geared towards a consumer market looking for a durable camcorder.
The W11 has 32GB of internal storage for recording up to 13.5 hours. The W10 has 8GB of internal storage of recording up to three hours of video. Users can record to a removable SD memory card as well. Both camcorders offer up to five hours of continuous recording time.
Durability
Both models are waterproof up to 16.4 ft. / 5m, shockproof, dustproof, and are capable of working at temperatures down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit.

“From soccer games to vacations, there are plenty of activities that families want to capture that require a product that fits their fun-filled lifestyles,” said Kazuto Ogawa, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “Weighing less than a pound, these new waterproof, shockproof and dustproof VIXIA models are perfect for active families so they won’t miss a minute of the action in any season, whether indoors or out, in good weather or wet weather.”
Design
Similar to the G50, the camcorders have a 3-inch touch-panel LCD screen that allows users to view a recording and change settings.
Pricing and availability
The VIXIA HF W11 and VIXIA HF W10 are both planned to be released in April for $449 and $399.
