Canon has announced the launch of the Canon EOS R6 Mark III full-frame mirrorless camera. The 3rd generation R6 delivers 7K open gate recording and up to 15 stops of dynamic range.
Image sensor
The EOS R6 Mark III features a 32.5MP CMOS full-frame image sensor that was developed and designed by Canon. It delivers a 34% increase in resolution compared to the EOS R6 Mark II, and a 61% increase in resolution compared to first generation EOS R6. The sensor also offers up to 15+ stops of dynamic range when you shoot in Canon Log 2. Additionally, the R6 Mark III is powered by the DIGIC X image processor.

Video resolutions
The headline video feature of the EOS R6 Mark III is open gate recording at up to 7K 29.97 fps in either 10-bit MP4 (6912 x 4608) or 12-bit RAW (6960 x 4640). You can also shoot at up to 119.8 fps in either DCI 4K or UHD for super slow motion. If you drop the resolution to DCI 2K or Full HD, then the maximum frame rate is even higher at 179.8 fps. The R6 Mark III now has a dedicated Slow and Fast (S & F) Mode on the mode dial for off-speed recording.
In addition, the Canon EOS Movie – 4K FINE mode delivers highly detailed oversampled videos at up to 59.94 fps.

File formats
The EOS R6 Mark III supports recording in Canon Log 2 and Canon Log 3 for up to 15+ stops of dynamic range. You can record internally in 12-bit Canon RAW Standard or Light options in 7K. For the other resolutions, you can choose between 10-bit and 8-bit H.265 and H.264 file formats. There’s also the option to record ProRes RAW to a compatible external recorder.
Plus, the R6 III has two memory card slots. One supports a CFexpress Type B card, and the other is for an SD card. You can record proxy files to the SD card while saving your recordings to the CFexpress Type B card.
Autofocus and IBIS
The EOS R6 Mark III features Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with people, animal, and vehicle detection. Another new feature for the R6 series of cameras is Register People Priority. This allows you to register a person in-camera once you have photographed them. You can register up to ten people at a time, and the camera will then prioritize them over people in the scene. And, the in-body image stabilizer delivers up to 8.5 stops of shake correction at the center, and 7.5 stops at the edges of your frame. There’s also Coordinated Image Stabilization for when you are using a lens with optical stabilization.
Other features
The EOS R6 Mark III features a 0.5-inch, 3.69 million dot electronic viewfinder. It also has a 3.0-inch vari-angle LCD screen with 1.62 million dots of resolution. The EOS R6 Mark III also offers a range of professional monitoring tools to ensure your video looks great. These include zebras, false color, and waveform monitor. You can apply LUTs to your videos in-camera as well.
The R6 Mark III has 3.5mm mini jacks for an external microphone and headphones to monitor your audio.
What we think
The Canon EOS R6 Mark III is a powerful hybrid solution if you need to be able to shoot video and still photographs with your camera. 7K open gate footage is ideal for cropping if you need to deliver both vertical and horizontal video output. The new S & F mode also makes it quicker to switch to off-speed recording during a shoot. In addition, the option to use exposure tools such as zebras and false color makes it easier to ensure your footage looks perfect. The EOS R6 Mark III will be greeted enthusiastically by current Canon shooters. It might tempt many others to move to the Canon ecosystem as well.

The Canon EOS R6 Mark III full-frame mirrorless camera will be available in November, priced at $2,799 for the body only. You will also be able to pick up kits with Canon’s RF24-105 F4 L IS USM and RF24-105 F4-7.1 IS STM USM lenses for $4,049 and $3,149, respectively.
