Avid has released Media Composer 2026.8 and will show the update at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC2026) in Amsterdam. The company calls it a major release built around faster editing and more flexible collaboration. Avid says teams can also scale their workflows as projects demand.
Faster multicam editing
Leading the release is a new feature called PhraseFindAI Multicam Auto Cut. It works from a transcript and builds an edit that switches camera angles based on who is speaking. According to Avid, that removes the repetitive setup work from the first pass. You start with the AI-assisted rough cut, then fine-tune the pacing and drop in reaction shots. Avid is aiming the feature at interviews, panels, podcasts and other unscripted multi-speaker productions.
Better transcript control
Transcript Tools goes after the trust problem with AI transcripts. You can edit a transcript, keep the original intact and undo the changes later. Splitting segments gives the transcript a cleaner structure. Grouping speaker text into paragraphs makes it easier to read. Avid says the result is a transcript workflow you can review and manage with more confidence.
Practical workflow enhancements
Choose Bin Column Search helps you find the right metadata in large, complex bins. Swap Audio Track from Subclip pulls in alternate source audio without a rebuild of your media selections. Titler+ Keyframe Rectification holds keyframes in place more predictably through trims, splits and overwrites. None of these is a headline feature. Avid argues they save more time across a busy production than the ones that get the demo slot.
Other improvements
An OpenTimelineIO 2.0 adapter update improves timeline exchange with third-party tools, which makes round-tripping an edit less painful. Shared Projects picks up more collaboration and storage flexibility. Avid has also lifted the track and resolution limits in Media Composer First, the free version built for editors learning the program.
Ready to Edit
Avid is also using IBC2026 to show Ready to Edit, its next agentic AI capability. The company says it is designed to “accelerate content preparation for editors without compromising the creative process.” Avid will demonstrate a tighter link between Media Composer and Avid Content Core as well. Content Core is Avid’s cloud-native platform for managing, editing, reviewing and publishing content from anywhere.
What we think
Media Composer is still the standard across high-end film and television post. It earned that spot by staying upright on multi-terabyte projects with a room full of editors attached to them, and this release pushes harder on the same ground. The more interesting news sits at the other end of the market. Indie filmmakers and creators rarely touch Media Composer, and a limited free tier was part of the reason. Dropping the track and resolution limits in Media Composer First hands anyone who is curious a real version to learn on, at no cost.
