Apple reveals new Mac Pro with M2 Ultra chip

Today, Apple lifted the curtain on its latest Mac Pro, now fitted with the powerful M2 Ultra chip. But how does the new Mac Pro stack up to Apple’s other Mac Pros? Here’s what we know so far.

Mac Pro: Faster video editing workflows

Apple says the Mac Pro offers up to three times faster performance than its previous generation. That includes rendering high-quality graphics to managing complex timelines and real-time 4K encoding.

Thanks to the new M2 Ultra chip, you can also expect faster rendering of complex scenes, quicker video transcoding and smooth real-time encoding of up to 24 4K camera feeds. With 192 GB of unified memory, it takes video editing workflows to a whole new level, even enabling the rendering of scenes that simply were impossible before.

Robust versatility with PCIe expansion

One of the standout features of the new Mac Pro is its PCIe expansion support. This makes it an indispensable tool for video editing professionals who need tailored internal expansion for their workflows. The seven PCIe expansion slots allow for significant customization, allowing you to adapt your system to your professional needs.

Advanced connectivity for smooth workflows

Additionally, it can support up to six Pro Display XDRs, providing higher performance for multi-cam editing, color grading and rendering.

macOS Ventura

The new Mac Pro ships with macOS Ventura. Designed to take full advantage of Apple silicon, Ventura claims to deliver a seamless, efficient experience for video editing professionals. From faster load times to better software compatibility, the macOS Ventura should make your editing experience smoother and more streamlined.

What we think

The new Mac Pro with the M2 Ultra chip, boasting either the M1 Max or M1 Ultra chip, is equipped to handle high-resolution editing and 3D rendering. The new Mac Pro promises to meet and surpass the demands of power users who prioritize speed, reliability and top-tier performance. So, though it comes with a heftier price tag, this new Mac does appear to deliver top-notch features for professional video editors.
