amaran has unveiled its new flagship family of full-color COB (chip on board) lights for creators. There are four lights in the amaran Ray series, covering outputs from 60 W to 660 W, powered by the all-new OmniColor light engine.
OmniColor
amaran’s all-new full-color OmniColor light engine features in all of the Ray series fixtures. OmniColor builds on amaran’s previous full-color chipsets. It also adds some of the technology from amaran’s sister company Aputure’s Blair light engine. OmniColor expands the red and blue ranges and introduces an indigo emitter to the light source. This delivers a fuller, more balanced spectrum of light.
In addition, the OmniColor light engine achieves SSI scores of 87 (Tungsten) and 80 (D56). This means that your videos will have cleaner whites, truer skin tones, and more accurate colors across the spectrum.
amaran Ray 60c & 120c
The 60 W Ray 60c and 120 W Ray 120c are the first compact full-color COB lights in amaran’s range. These new lights are ultra-compact and portable, so they are ideal for content creators on the go. The Ray 60c measures just 5.7 inches (14.5 cm) by 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) by 1.7 inches (4.4 cm) and weighs 1.16 pounds (528.5 g). Amazingly, the Ray 120c is the same size, apart from being a little deeper at 2.0 inches (5.1 cm) and a little heavier at 1.32 pounds (599.4 g). Also, both lights feature a full-size Bowens Mount for pairing with amaran softboxes and modifiers.
Brighter output
The amaran Ray 60c delivers 50% more output in a body roughly half the size of the amaran COB 60x S. With the Ray 120c, you get 22% more output than the amaran 150c but with a nearly 85% reduction in size of the light. You can also use the two lights with the amaran Ace E-Lock system and the all-new compact amaran Peak 75 and amaran Peak battery systems. These deliver run times of 46 minutes for the Ray 60c with the Peak 75, and 35 minutes for the Ray 120c with the Peak, both measured at 100% output. Alternatively, you can use the included DC power adapter or the USB-C PD input to power the Ray 60c and Ray 120c.
amaran Ray 360c & 660c
The 360 W Ray 360c and 660 W Ray 660c are amaran’s most powerful full-color COBs to date. They are designed for dedicated studio environments and run from a single AC cable with no bulky external power brick. The Ray 660c is amaran’s first 600 W fixture and its brightest COB to date. It’s also the first full-color COB in its power class to feature an integrated power supply.
Additionally, the Ray 360c delivers over 80% more output than the amaran 300c. Both lights offer DMX control via an optional USB-C to 5-Pin DMX In & Out Adapter. This means you can integrate the Ray 360c and Ray 660c into industry-standard lighting console workflows.

Other Ray series features
All of the Ray series fixtures feature an IP54-rated design for dust and splash resistance. This means that you can work in wind, light rain, sand or humidity without worrying about your lights. The Ray series lights also have built-in NFC, so you can simply tap to add Ray fixtures in the amaran app in seconds.
Plus, the new FlowTurn knob offers adaptive, tactile control. You can make fine, one-step adjustments when precision is needed or use fast spins to zip through settings when you want to.
Modifier ecosystem
All of the ray series fixtures have a full-size Bowens mount for adding modifiers. However, amaran has also designed optional mini reflectors, fresnels, and barn doors for the Ray 60c & Ray 120c. In addition, there are full-size versions for the Ray 360c and Ray 660c
What we think
The new amaran Ray series of lights are a very attractive proposition. They offer some of the most powerful outputs for these classes of lights. The NFC connection makes it quick and easy to add app control, and you have the option of DMX control for the larger fixtures. Whatever your lighting scenario, the new amaran Ray series has a fixture to meet your needs.
