7Artisans has released an updated version of its full-frame 35 mm prime lens. The 7Artisans f/1.4 Mark III lens has been redesigned optically and is an entirely manual lens. It’s available for Sony E, Nikon Z, Canon EOS-R and Leica L mount cameras.
New design
With its new 35 mm Mark III lens, 7Artisans has refreshed the design physically and optically. You can also now choose between two color schemes with black and titanium options available. The new lens has an all-metal construction with a chrome-plated surface. As a result, the lens weighs just under 10 ounces (274 g). In addition, the focus markings on the lens body are laser engraved for durability.
Optical construction
The 7Artisans 35mm Mark III prime lens is designed with seven lens elements in five groups. However, these now include an extra-low dispersion (ED) lens element which should help to reduce chromatic aberration. There is also a high refraction element to further improve image quality. In addition, the 35 mm lens features a multi-layer MC coating that reduces light reflection to improve the sharpness of your image.
De-clicked aperture
Another new feature of the Mark III lens is the option to switch between a clicked and de-clicked aperture. The ability to smoothly change exposure while filming is essential for video work. The wide maximum aperture of f/1.4 means the 7Artisans 35 mm lens will be great for use in low-light situations. You will also be able to obtain a very shallow depth of field. In addition, the 10-bladed iris should give smooth, circular bokeh in the out-of-focus parts of your image.
Other features
The 7Artisans 35mm Mark III lens has a close focus distance of just under one foot (0.3 meters). It also has a filter thread diameter of 52 mm.
What we think
The 50 mm lens has always been considered a “standard” focal length for full-frame cameras. This is because it delivers a field of view which closely resembles that of human vision. However, 35 mm is becoming increasingly popular as a walk-around focal length, long enough for portraits yet still wide enough for landscapes. 7Artisans’ new Mark III lens is a budget choice to consider if you are looking to add a 35 mm option to your camera bag. The de-clicked aperture also makes it ideal for video shooters. In addition, the inclusion of an ED lens element should improve the image quality over the previous versions of this lens.
Pricing and availability
The full-frame 7Artisans 35mm Mark III f/1.4 lens is available now. It retails at $189.
