Editing in 8K: Minimum system requirements

In a nutshell

  • Editing 8K calls for a strong CPU, a capable GPU and at least 32GB of RAM. Good starting points include the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X, the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K and Nvidia’s RTX 50-series cards.
  • Cooling and fast NVMe SSDs are not optional. A hardware accelerator card can take on even more of the load.
  • Expect a full build to land between $2,000 and $4,000. Prebuilt machines like the Apple Mac mini make a strong alternative.

8K video is here. Cameras from RED, Canon, Sony and Blackmagic shoot it; 8K TVs are easy to find; and more producers and filmmakers are weighing whether to move into the format. The hardware question comes first. What does it actually take to work with this much data?

Below is a part-by-part look at what goes into a machine built for 8K editing, and what each component does for your timeline.

The central processing unit (CPU)

Start with the CPU. It’s the brain of the build, and it sets the pace for everything from scrubbing the timeline to spitting out a final render.

For most editors, the Intel Core Ultra 7 265K is plenty of processor at around $290, with 20 cores to spread the work.

Want more rendering muscle? The Intel Core Ultra 9 285K, at 24 cores, and AMD’s Ryzen 9 9950X, with 16 cores and 32 threads, both deliver it for a couple hundred dollars more. Figure about $539 for the Intel chip and a little over $500 for the Ryzen.

If you want the most multi-threaded headroom you can get, AMD’s Ryzen 9 9950X3D, its content-focused flagship, runs roughly $700.

Any of these will chew through 8K footage. But they will need aftermarket cooling to keep running since neither of them comes with a cooler.

The graphics processing unit (GPU)

Next comes the graphics card, which carries much of the load during 8K editing and playback. Shifting that work off the CPU keeps the timeline responsive, especially once effects and color grades start stacking up.

NVIDIA’s RTX 50-series and AMD’s Radeon RX 9000-series are both built for this kind of punishment. Either family can play back full-resolution 8K with few dropped frames, as long as the rest of the system keeps up. Stay current on drivers and firmware too, since editing performance on a given card often improves over time with updates.

Cooling options

Cooling matters more than people expect on a chip grinding through hours of 8K renders. On the air side, the Noctua NH-U9S handles the job for about $70. The larger NH-D15 G2 costs closer to $150 to $170 and ranks among the best air coolers money can buy. For liquid cooling, a 360 mm all-in-one like the NZXT Kraken Elite 360 pulls temperatures down further and fits most mid- and full-tower cases.

The motherboard

Everything else plugs into the motherboard, so it decides which CPU, how much memory and what expansion you can run. On the Intel side, the MSI MAG Z890 Tomahawk WiFi is a capable mid-range board for about $250, and its built-in Wi-Fi saves you a USB adapter. AMD builders should look at an AM5 board on the X870 chipset. The good news in 2026 is that the old DDR4-versus-DDR5 debate has ended. New Intel and AMD platforms run DDR5 only.

RAM options

Memory is where 8K projects get hungry. Begin with 32 GB of DDR5 at DDR5-6000. That covers 4K and 6K comfortably and gets you into 8K, though large or layered timelines will ask for more.

Choosing the right RAM

For real breathing room, step up to a 64 GB kit (2×32 GB) of DDR5-6000, such as Corsair’s Vengeance line, which runs roughly $800 to $1,200 as of mid-2026. The same memory shortage squeezing the rest of this build has pushed DDR5 well above the lows it saw a couple years back, so doubling your memory now takes a real bite out of the budget. That bandwidth still earns its keep on heavy 8K timelines, so anyone cutting an 8K feature or series should plan for 64 GB or more from the start and budget for it.

Accelerator card

An accelerator card can lift still more weight off the CPU and GPU. AJA’s KONA line, including the KONA 5 and the newer KONA X, adds I/O and codec acceleration that demanding 8K work appreciates. Editors who run one often watch their CPU and GPU loads fall once the card takes over the heavy decoding.

Mac users can skip the card altogether. Apple’s old Afterburner, built for the Intel Mac Pro, is gone. Apple silicon now bakes ProRes encode and decode straight into the chip’s media engine, so a modern Mac handles that acceleration on its own.

Storage solutions: Solid state drive (SSD)

Storage splits into two jobs. Your boot drive holds the operating system and applications. The Samsung 990 Pro fills that role nicely at around $380 for 2 TB as of mid-2026, and the WD Black SN850X trades blows with it at a similar price. SSD prices have been a roller coaster this year, spiking past $600 in the spring before easing back, so check the going rate before you buy. If your board supports PCIe 5.0 and you want the fastest scratch disk available, the Crucial T705 reads at more than 14,000 MB/s.

Keep your video files on a second drive. Footage fills storage in a hurry, and separating it from the system drive lets your editing software run without fighting for bandwidth.

Graphics cards options

Buying a GPU in 2026 takes patience. The pandemic-era shortages that once tripled resale prices have faded, but a new squeeze has replaced them. AI data centers are buying up production, and gaming and creator cards routinely sell above their official MSRPs. A prebuilt machine is one way around the markup, since system builders get allocation that individual buyers can’t. Sourcing your own parts? Stick to established brands like Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, Zotac and PNY. EVGA is no longer one of them, having left the graphics-card business a few years back. For a capable mid-range, the RTX 5070, the RTX 5070 Ti and AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 XT all manage 8K editing well. Street prices start at about $550 for an RTX 5070 and around $750 for an RTX 5070 Ti, with the AMD RX 9070 XT landing near $740.

High-end graphics card options

With more to spend, the NVIDIA RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 sit at the top of the stack, alongside AMD’s best RX 9000-series cards. Brace yourself for the prices, though. The 5080 carries a $999 MSRP but sells closer to $1,360. The 5090 is where it gets painful. It launched at $1,999 and now lists between roughly $3,300 and $4,300 depending on the model, more than double its original sticker. That AI-driven demand is the cause, and it shows no sign of letting up.

Choosing the right PC Case

With the internals picked out, they all need a home. The Corsair 4000D Airflow stays popular near $130, with a mesh front and fan support that keep temperatures in check. Optical drives have largely vanished from new builds, so cases with 5.25-inch bays are getting hard to find. If you still burn a disc now and then, an external USB Blu-ray drive solves it without dictating your case choice.

Power supply

That leaves power. The supply feeds the whole system, and the graphics card is its hungriest customer. A quality 850-watt unit such as the Corsair RM850x is fully modular, costs around $170 and suits most of the builds described here. Pair one with an RTX 5090, though, and you’ll want 1,000 watts or more for healthy headroom.

What it will cost you and alternatives

Add it all up and a build like this lands somewhere between $2,000 and $4,000, with the graphics card driving most of that spread. Budget for the extras too, including a monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, an operating system and editing software.

Not everyone wants to build. Apple’s Mac mini is the standout prebuilt for the money. The M4 Pro model starts at $1,399 and handles 6K and 8K timelines smoothly thanks to the chip’s media engines. It tops out at 48 GB of unified memory now, since Apple quietly dropped the 64 GB option mid-cycle amid chip shortages, so don’t plan on speccing one higher. Timing matters here too. An M5 and M5 Pro refresh is expected in late 2026, so a newer mini could be just around the corner. MacBook Pro laptops with M4 Pro and M4 Max chips edit high-resolution footage just as capably. For the most demanding 8K work, the Mac Studio and its top-end M-series chips have become Apple’s desktop workhorse, now that the iMac Pro is no longer sold.
