Shimoda has launched the third generation of its Action X camera backpacks. The Shimoda Action X v3 adds a new 35-liter size. It also gets a larger side access door and three Capture Clip mounting points. Shimoda has released an all-new Insider Sling too, a compact bag for traveling light.

Design

The Action X v3 comes in five sizes from 25 to 50 liters, including the new 35-liter pack. Shimoda says the smaller sizes suit a day hike. The larger ones hold everything you need for a full-on expedition. That isn’t advertising hype either, since the Action X has been to the top of Mount Everest.

It’s a stylish bag as well as a functional one. You can choose from four colorways: black, yellow, cappuccino and burnt red. All fabrics and hardware are PFAS-free. A water-repellent carbonate coating and a rain cover come standard.

Easier access

The side access door is 2.4 inches (6 cm) taller than on the previous generation. That makes it easier to get your gear in and out. Three Capture Clip mounting points on the outside keep your camera at hand.

Shimoda says every Action X pack, right down to the smallest 25-liter model, accepts an optional RST (Rear/Side/Top) Core Unit. That gives you room for a camera with a 180-600mm or 200-600mm zoom attached.

Other new features

The harness uses breathable Airmesh padding for better airflow when the weather warms up. The pack is wider now too, so it fits a 16-inch laptop sleeve with secure closure.

You can choose from at least three harness heights for around 2.7 inches (7 cm) of torso adjustment. A Booster kit or Women’s Harness Straps can improve the fit. Shimoda says the Action X v3 suits anyone from 5 feet to 6 feet 9 inches tall.

Insider Sling

The Insider Sling is a compact cross-body bag for days when you need only the essentials. It holds a camera body and two midrange pro f2.8 zooms. A body with a 70-200mm f2.8 attached fits too. There’s room for a phone, wallet and cables as well.

The strap adjusts easily, and a dedicated AirTag pocket helps you keep track of the bag. An Airmesh panel keeps your back cooler. The nylon shell is PFAS-free and water-repellent. Colors include black, burnt red and cappuccino.

What we think

Camera gear isn’t cheap, and even the sturdiest lenses hate being knocked around. Video shooters happily buy expensive gear. Too often they skimp on the bag that carries it. Shimoda’s Action X v3 keeps your cameras and lenses safe and easy to reach when it’s time to shoot.

Airmesh padding and adjustable harness heights make it comfortable for all-day wear. The Insider Sling suits days when you want a camera and a lens or two on the go. If you’re upgrading your camera bag, both are worth a look.

Pricing and availability

The Shimoda Action X v3 backpack and Insider Sling are available to order now. Pricing for the Action X v3 starts at $300. The Insider Sling costs $130.
