GoPro is taking its tech in a new direction. The company is working with Italian motorcycle helmet maker AGV. GoPro says the new product will be “the future of motorcycle helmets” and that it arrives in 2027.
Who is AGV?
Gino Amisano founded AGV in Valenza, Italy, in 1947. The name stands for Amisano Gino Valenza. The company first made leather seats and motorcycle saddles. It added leather motorcycle helmets a year later and fiberglass helmets in 1954.
Today AGV makes a wide range of motorcycle helmets, including full-face racing, sport, touring and off-road models.
What has GoPro announced?
On Nov. 2, GoPro shared a teaser video and a press release. The company said it’s joining forces with AGV to give riders the tech and performance they need, built in. GoPro confirmed it’s developing a fully integrated, tech-enabled motorcycle helmet with AGV. It says the helmet will pair AGV’s design and safety pedigree with GoPro’s engineering and imaging expertise.
What will the helmet do?
The teaser doesn’t give much away. A voiceover says the video shows the helmet on a track for the first time. A motorcycle rider POV clip is presumably the helmet’s own footage.
The helmet itself is black, shiny and sleek. Close-ups show small domes that likely hold the cameras.
When will the helmet launch?
GoPro hasn’t shared a development timeline. It says only that the GoPro x AGV helmet is coming in 2027 and that more details will follow closer to launch. You can sign up to be one of the first to try it.
GoPro is also recruiting motorcycle riders for its Test Pilot Program. Share your social handles and helmet size when you sign up to learn more.
What we think
A high-tech motorcycle helmet is a new direction for GoPro. So is the collaboration with AGV. It’s unexpected, but it puts GoPro’s camera tech to practical use. It could also become an important safety device for riders.
The teaser leaves questions open. It’s not clear how many cameras the helmet has or how it records. We also don’t know whether it shoots regular or 360-degree video. This is the first new product announcement since GoPro announced its merger with Starman Optical, Inc. It will be interesting to see where the company goes next.
